All of the fabric softeners used to say don't use bluing in the same rinse. They don't say that anymore. Is that because they figure no one uses bluing anymore? Or have they changed their formula?

The reason I use bluing in the wash cycle with the detergent and bleach is because if I use bluing in the rinse cycle with fabric softener, the fabric softener causes the bluing to form little blue beads and they stain the clothes.

Bluing with bleach cancels out the whitening power of each other. When I used bluing, I first let the whites wash in just the detergent, for around 5 min. Then added the bleach and let the load go throught the whole cycle. If you add bleach at the beginning, it slows down the cleaning power of the detergent.

Then washed the load again with hot water and bluing. Great results.

With the regular use of phosphates my grungy yellowed whites are now sparkling and I can use bleach much less often.

Bluing and oxygen bleach make me itch below ..and Vagisil is expensive! :-)

With all those chemicals going on, I do recommmend a final rinse with no chemicals at all!

They Figure No One Uses Bluing Anymore

Give that man a Kewpie doll! *LOL*

With most major laundry detergents and other additives packed with OBAs and other whitening agents, bluing pretty much as died out. Damn hard to find the stuff in many areas. Besides in the long run, OBAs work much better over a wider array of man made and natural textiles than bluings ever could.

Being as the above may, use bluing now and then for certian linens and other whites. When one does use bluing it goes in the final rinse, or starch bath.

Rarely use fabric softener, but for loads that require extra brightening and plan on adding the stuff to the final rinse, one just uses any detergent with OBAs, such as Persil or Tide "Pro-Line", for the wash.

Never liked using bluing in the wash bath because long contact time with bluing can make laundry grey and dull. Besides the wash cycles on my Miele are too long for such things.
