I recently bought a box of Bold detergent as it was on a very special offer that was too good to miss. However, despite 3 deep rinses in my machine there is loads of suds left over and I find that I am having to run another rinse cycle (which on my machine is three deep rinses)to get rid of it. Either that or I have to add softener to somehow neutralise the suds! I know I have VERY soft water and am only using about 30-40 ml of powder in the wash. I really like the fragrance and it cleans well but I am concerned about the detergent residue left on my clothes. Does anyone else who uses Bold have this problem? I find the liquid is less sudzy that the powder. Bold has been around for years and many people use it. Is this a common problem or do people use softener with it despite the fact that it is supposed to have softener built in?

Bold

I haven't used Bold in ages as I am allergic to it, it makes me itchy :(

I think it might just be Proctor and Gambles more concentrated formulations, the liquids rinse out well though, I used Ariel compact Liquid (not the excel gel) a while back and it was excellent at rinsing, Unfortunately I'm allergic to bold, it gives me a horrible itchy rash.

I have recently become a liquid convert, I much prefer liquid detergents as they seem to suds less and rinse out quickly, don't fade my darks and blacks and they also seem to have a softening element, washing seems softer if it has been washed in a liquid rather than stiff as a board if I have washed in powder. I use liquids for my white washes too, I just add a scoop of bicarbonate of soda or some ecover laundry bleach into the drum, before adding the clothes, then a regular capful of liquid into the drawer.

I don't like fabric conditioners, because the fragrances are really sickly and strong, Lenor used to be my favourite, the blue one, but they changed the scent and added fresh pearls and it makes me cough and wheeze and my skin itch like mad. Aldis ancosoft is about as much as I can take, as they don't smell overpowering.

I like Surf Small and Mighty liquid at the moment :) using Sunshine Lemon, Tropical and Morning Dew Liquids at the moment, and they have just enough scent which is lingers on the clothes enough without bathing your clothes in stinky perfume.

I happened to be in Morrisons last week and they had Surcare softener reduced to £1 so I bought two. Kind of defeats the object but the amount of suds in the final rinse is absurd. I will probably avoid Bold in the future. So much for a bargain!!

Hi Hoovermatic.

I don't think that using Surcare with Bold defeats the object, don't worry! Bold doesn't condition effectively, but given that it is bought for a scent Surcare is a very sensible companion as you can still enjoy the scent of the Bold which you chose.

To throw a curve ball in, however, Surcare is a McBride softener and in my experience not much cop at reducing static in the dryer when compared with Lenor or Comfort. Some Lenors are designed to go with Bold I think and they're actually marketed together. Yeah, I know that defeats the purpose but don't forget what P+G stands for!!

In answer to your original question, I do think that Bold produces more suds than other detergents in the rinse but (oddly) I don't think it's necessarily a worry. It's still rinsed out adequately, just off putting to look at. If you gave the laundry 3o rinses, there would still be suds. I don't like it either though, and don't often have it for the same reason. Ariel used to be a beggar for this too, but seems better now as does Daz.

Ultimately, Bold is inadequate as a conditioner and therefore (IMO) not an `honest' product so I'm not a huge fan.

Ah...

Was brought up on Bold, both my Mum and Nan loved it - the original blue one.

I use Bold a fair bit, along with every other detergent out there lol.

You're right, it's a strong smell and can always tell clothes that have been washed in, or a house that uses Bold.

On the softness front, it is not as good as a separate, when a product is combined and getting it to do multiple jobs, a compromise is going to come somewhere, as, if they worked fully, all the products would be combined.

I'm not chemistry enough to be 100%, but I believe Bold is a different type of softener, it's a clay based one. Whereas a standard softener is oil/grease based one.

I will happily combine softeners with Bold, as mentioned above, P&G do manufacture Lenor softeners to be combined with Bold and there is one variant of Bold that actually has Lenor stamped on the box (the pink peony one).

Suppose it does defeat the cost saving object, but I don't think of that as far as laundry and cleaning products are concerned :)

They also advertise those new scent beads to be combined with Lenor softener; I have not done that yet as I find the beads plenty strong enough on their own, and as live in very soft water area, can get away with no softener. Did combine the beads once with Kirkland Scent Gems softener, along with Gain 3in1 flings detergent (the moonlight scent) and the scent actually made me il - I kid you not.

Oh

Also forgot to mention - at one time, I noticed ALL the P&G UK detegrents went through a phase of being really sudsy; could not get them to rinse out.

I have noticed this has much improved, but I have always noticed that P&G detergents, not as clean rinising as others.

Popularity

Also, yes Bold is very popular, it's one of P&Gs half billion dollar brands, more valuable to them than the Fairy brand.

Lenor is the exact same product as US Downy softener, so that's combined when looking at sales.

Probably going on a bit now, but if you're interested I've linked below

I don't have a problem with Bold. Currently have a box of Rose & Peony.

I do prefer Areil overall. (Bother are powder)

I've no problem with Bold, I use the Blue one & the Purple one. The scent lasts through the dryer which I like & Bold can be bought cheaply, 20 wash liquitabs for £2.97 at Asda or £3 for the 24 wash liquid.

Bold powder is my go-to detergent most of the time, and I've had the same issues previously. Strange thing is, the box I picked up earlier this week appears to be very well behaved in the sudsing department, and rinses clear easily. As to whether this is just due to slight variations from one batch to another, or P&G changing and tinkering with things behind the scenes (as they do), I wouldn't know.

One thing I have noticed before is that a box of powder can start off OK, then become tenaciously sudsy over time as you work your way through it. Maybe one possibility is that certain ingredients settle more readily than others, and the composition of the powder alters as you near the bottom of the box.

What Lenor fabric conditioners are marketed to be used with Bold? As far as I can see none of them are because none of the Bold detergents have the same scent as Lenors apart from the Sleep Sensations one.

There is the ruby and jasmine one, along with the peony blossom one, there used to be the black diamond and lotus one (when bold did the White diamond and lotus flower detergent). Dependent on the store you're in there must be over 30 variants of Lenor, I honestly see a new one every week (even yesterday in fact)

Like here

Honestly, there is loads of Lenors, you will have to go to a few different stores to find/see them all (even the discount stores) as one store cannot stock all variants. some are limited edition and Lenor won't even put them on their website.

Example on the link below,

On that link, you'll have to close the PPP up asking you to sign up to the newsletter

Lenor Ruby Jasmine is a regular fragrance. Bold Peony & Rose doesn't have a matching Lenor, I'm presuming you meant when it used to advertise 'A touch of Lenor freshness' but it doesn't anymore. In Wilko they had Bold, Lenor & the Unstoppables on offer side by side. Scent overload if you ask me.

Lenor have:

Spring Awakening,
Summer Breeze,
Fresh Meadow (Febreze),
Moonlight Harmony,
Pure Care,
Almond Oils,
Ocean Escape,
Wild Flower Bloom,
Emerald & Ivory Flower,
Topaz & Magnolia,
Gold Orchid,
Ruby Jasmine,
Plus the new one from the link Yellow Zephyr (limited edition)
And 3 Unstoppables scents.
