My father's in a power wheel chair which got out of his control and ran into the oven door for a Modern GE Oven Range. The outer glass shattered.

Is this something that can be repaired by myself, or should I call the repairman? Can the glass even be replaced solo, or do I have to replace the door as a unit?

Sorry for not giving a model number, it's the same as appears in the photo. I think it's the RGB740 family.

Thanks -

Bill

Broken outer door glass on a modern GE gas range

Hi Bill, you can replace all the parts of the oven door separately in fact you cannot buy a complete door for an oven like that.

Best thing to do is just order the outer glass the entire door assembly lifts off the hinges and you lay it on the floor and take it apart not too hard to replace.

If you don’t want to replace it yourself you can probably take the door assembly into a local appliance dealer have them order the glass and assemble it for you and then take it home and reinstall.

Hi John -

Thanks for your prompt and complete answer to my problem, it's much appreciated.

Something turned up in the mean time ... my Father is uber-delux cheap and doesn't see the need to replace the glass... he says "It runs fine without it."

I pointed out that the (Interior) glass will be the same temperature as the oven temperature, usually 350-400 degrees, and it's a significant hazard. He is unimpressed, despite just loosing control of the wheel chair and breaking the exterior panel.

Aside from the burn and heat containment issues, are there any other "fear of God" reasons why the exterior panel must be replaced?

Regardless, I will just absorb the cost and buy the replacement myself.

Thanks,

Bill

Could be wrong but that outer glass serves among other things same purpose as double glass windows. That is second outer glass window provides a measure of insulation from heat radiating out of oven.

It very least this could be nothing. However also could cause enough of difference that affects performance of oven. Heat loss might cause thermostat to cycle more frequently to keep oven at set temp.

Then there is fact you'll be sending more heat out of oven as well...

Bought a large roaster oven at Goodwill that was NIB but damaged. Glass window was broken, but figured no big deal, would just slap some heavy aluminum foil over space and that would be that. Things didn't work out so well.

Oven seemed to take longer to reach set temp and cycled more frequently than one though it should. Ended up donating thing to another thrift shop...

Broken Outer Glass On A GE Gas Range

The range will cook and Self-Clean just fine without the outer glass, Just keep kids away from the range when in use especially durning the SC cycle, the remaining glass will be hot enough to burn anyone that touches it especially durning the clean cycle.

There should still be two layers of glass there to insulate against major heat loss when using the oven.
