could anyone tell me why the old G.E. refrigerator my mom has (1968 vintage) makes this noise sometimes like someone belching? It really made for some interesting jokes while at the dinner table with the family as a kid. This fridge is one of the old ones with the fresh food compartment up top, and the freezer on the bottom with a pull out drawer. Does the defrost system of this fridge reverse the refrigerant cycle like a heat pump?

I remember the bottom freezer hot-gas defrost units well. I'm not sure they made the hot-gas defrost as late as 1968. It worked so well I always wondered why they stopped making it and went to the crappy heaters.

If you see a valve/solenoid near the compressor, then yes, it is what GE called hot gas defrost, and it does reverse the flow and work like a heat pump.

Do you have the automatic filling ice cube trays?

Sometimes a bad evaporator fan motor will make a noise that may sound like that. Can you tell specifically where the noise is coming from?

It's a real quick little burping noise, probably not but about a second or so long. It always makes the sound when the compressor is stopped. It's sort of a liquidy sound, so I've always thought it was just the reversing valve activating, and the liquid & gaseous freon mixing together. The fridge has always made the noise, and since I've lived with it my entire life, I don't think anything is actually wrong with it. It just added for some amusement when the family would be sitting around the table eating...BURP! followed by someone saying "Mind you manners!"
