Hello all!! I was going to try and replace the pump seal in one of my roller-matics, I just have one problem. I have no idea how to get the old seal out.. Could any of you out there give me any advice as how to do so. I have worked on a few Frigidaire washers before, but never had to mess with removing or installing a new water pump seal. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated. Another question.. spin bearings for a rapidry roller-matic. Can they still be found?? I was using my 68' Imperial roller-matic as a "daily driver" and noticed the spin was getting louder and louder. So I pulled it out of service and replaced it with a WO-65. Again any advice on this stuff would be greatly appreciated...Thank you all!!

1965

I believe the machine is a 65' deluxe model non rapidry. the other machine I mentioned with the bearings is a 68' WIN model Imperial with the rapidry feature.

Pat, just take the old bearing to the nearest bearing store and match it up. You might have to trim a raceway cover off of it. Just depends on what they have. They may even be able to order one.
For instance, SKF bearing number 6006 2RSJEM fits a Unimatic perfectly once you remove the raceway cover.
The pump seal is a different story. You need a donor pump, although you might run into the same problem. If worst comes to worst you can always gravity drain it.

Donor pump

Hey Steve.. How have you been? Is the bearing difficult to get out. I have the tech talk book for the 68' washer, but it doesn't give a lot of info on the upper bearing. I have a new seal for the existing pump on the other machine. What would the donor pump be used for? I thought about putting an electric pump on there until I found a new seal for the original. How would I go about gravity draining the machine if I had to go that route? Just bypass the pump all together and run a hose from the bottom of the tub to the wall?

Pat, I need to look at the book to refresh my memory on the bearing. As for the pump, it's easier to switch-out the pump then it is to rebuild it. I have found Frigidaire tinkered with the pumps too much. They changed the shape and diameter of the impellers for one thing and the seal is at the base of the impeller. So you can't easily switch them from one pump to another unless the diameter is correct to fit the housing.

As for gravity-draining, you can let the water run right through the pump or by-pass the pump and do as you suggested with a hose directly from the tub. You have to keep the hose on the floor, though, even when passing through walls. I've seen hoses run all the way into the back yard. As long as you keep the hose below the level of the tub, it will work.

I'm slammed today, typical of "the business". I'll get back to you on the bearing issue tonight.

The bearings as I recall

can just be tapped out with a bearing punch once the mechanism is completely torn down. The rollermatics have a very bizarre lower bearing it has a key pressed into it and if I recall the lower bearing is actually a metric size unlike the upper bearing. So you have to tap out the key and insert it into the new bearing.

Tricky but doable.

The lower bearing is an odd one, I think it's metric on the outside but not the inside diameter. I wanted to replace
It in my 1965 Roller-Matic but I couldn't find one! I did replace the top one and it fixed the loud spin noise.

I also had to remove hair (mine!) around the water pump seal once on that machine because it caused a leak. The seal itself was OK.

Check this thread out where I did a complete teardown and replacement of the lower bearing.  You may find some helpful information in there.  Ben did a lot of research to help me at the time.

Thank you guys!!!

I really appreciate all of the helpful input... Should I go ahead and replace both of the bearings while I'm in there or just the upper bearing. I have taken the roller-matic mechanism out of a washer before, but never actually did any work to the mechanism just cleaned thoroughly. Is there any special tools I will need to get to the upper bearing or will I be able to do the job with regular tools. I am mechanically inclined, just not a whole lot of appliance work. I usually work on cars and forklifts.
