Outstanding Idea!

Get out and fight!

I've already had one of my butch-biker-mama students write me and inform me that out of solidarity with the oppressed in America, she will not be in to class on the 10th...I am teaching, but we are doing a cultural awareness day.

Read the blogs from our enemies, folks. You are going to get just as far by begging for their "tolerance" as we did back in the 1930s. We need legal status and rights, on the federal level.

Many companies have sick days, personal days and PTO days. Calling in at the last minute is usually no big deal, but telling your boss that you are calling off gay -- or any excuse -- plants the idea in his brain that maybe you aren't the best or committed employee on the books. So, in this economy, when layoffs are very prevelant and the boss has to choose who he is going to lay off, I certainly wouldn't want this seed to be in the back of his head. Same as being a student; I wouldn't want to miss a pop test that day. Same as a business owner deciding whether or not he needs to be open for that revenue in a downturn economy...

Like the number of varieties of Heinz ketchup?

One can be fired at any time in ANY state that has employment-at-will. (IIRC most do),unless one is in a protected class ("WE AIN'T") you are not safe anywhere.

The law is frequently circumvented.

Same here in Germany as in Canada

Tho' leaving your employer in the lurch for no good reason is grounds for immediate dismissal. Asking for the day off the week before to attend a political rally should be answered positively if at all possible...but need not be.

We're going to have a tutti-fruiti cake on that day.

No, not my idea, the faculty secretaries. I am not entirely sure but what they know the significance.

Just some info

I work for a utility company and they just anounced a couple of weeks ago that they were going to extend benefits to anyone with same sex partners/domestic partners etc. I thought it was a very bold step since most companies do not offer this throughout Missouri.....
Of course you there are guidelines that must be followed like you have to prove that you and your partner have been living together and sharing expenses for at least 12 months and have to provide water bills, electric bills, mortage statements and such to prove that you are actually co-habitating

You can be fired in any state without reason, as long as it's not the wrong reason (Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 - protected classes - race, religion, gender, color, ethnic origin, age (over 40), etc.). Only California offers additional protections over and above Title VII. Some cities have codes that prohibit such discriminations, but it's often difficult to prove, since you can be fired without cause. U.S. employment law is very weak compared to those of many European countries where employees have more rights. We actually have relatively few rights as U.S. employees.
