Calling Maytag washer experts!

Hi All:
I am going to check and lube or replace the damper pads on the A612, so I got this damper spring device to help with the process. Can anyone tell me what the hell to do with it? Will it make the job easier or was it a waste of money?

Hi Bobby,

That is a spring tool for the AmanaTag washers. I'm not sure if you can use it on a real Maytag tub spring, as they are much stronger. That tool is used to hook and unhook the tub suspension springs on the dreaded Amanatag washers (which are no longer manufactured. I'd say it was a waste of $$$.

As I understand it, you don't have to compress the springs to change the damper pads.

The process as I recall it as described to me:

1) Unplug washer (duh)

2) Remove front and top of washer - possibly the top just needs to be raised enough to let the tub go up a few inches.

3) Remove belts

4) Set main (biggest in the middle) pulley on a wood 4x4, so that it lifts the tub off the base support. See #6

5) At that point, the pads should be exposed and you should be able to remove the old ones and install the new ones.

6) I haven't done this but since the entire washer is balanced on a 4x4 block of wood, you might want to brace the washer at the edges/corners as well, so it doesn't fall off the 4x4 and slam the tub support onto the base support (and maybe on your fingers!).

I just got the "new" pads- they are white pieces of felt! What happened to the poly pads? I guess they are going to do everything they can to try to shorten the life of these machines, no matter what. Hopefully, the original poly pads are still in good shape. I'll keep everyone posted.
