As I understand it, you don't have to compress the springs to change the damper pads.
The process as I recall it as described to me:
1) Unplug washer (duh)
2) Remove front and top of washer - possibly the top just needs to be raised enough to let the tub go up a few inches.
3) Remove belts
4) Set main (biggest in the middle) pulley on a wood 4x4, so that it lifts the tub off the base support. See #6
5) At that point, the pads should be exposed and you should be able to remove the old ones and install the new ones.
6) I haven't done this but since the entire washer is balanced on a 4x4 block of wood, you might want to brace the washer at the edges/corners as well, so it doesn't fall off the 4x4 and slam the tub support onto the base support (and maybe on your fingers!).
