I've had gas ranges (with standing pilots) in the past, and never noticed a problem with the heat. My first experience was when I bought a house in 1978 and it came with a Hardwick 'Debutante' range (high/low range) with 4 standing pilot lights. My most recent was my former residence where I had a 1957 Kenmore 36" range with griddle, once again, with 4 standing pilot lights. The sad truth is that I never cook, but I do like having the non-dependance on electricity. I've lived in Atlanta long enough to have experienced several ice storms and no power, and it would be nice to know if/when that happens again I could fire up the range and warm up some food or prepare coffee, etc. I do have gas hot water and a fireplace - all I need is the range and then I would feel pretty confident that I could stay right here for several days without power.
I'm always on the lookout for a zoomy gas range. If something similar shows up locally, I'll probably make the switch.
