Did Caloric ever make washers & dryers? I've seen stoves, fridges & dishwashers but I don't recall if I've ever seen laundry appliances......

Does anyone remember when they were wound down and who bought them out?

Yes Caloric marketed a couple of each, deluxe and stripped down. Yesterday's (?) POD with the TIDE contest mentioned Caloric as a brand of washer. The Atlanta Gas Light Co. sold Caloric dryers in the 60s. I don't know who made the laundry appliances for them. Zenith marketed a washer and dryer for a while also, although I never saw one. A lady on my paper route had just replaced her Zenith with a GE V-12 in 1965 or '66 and that was the first time I had heard about the brand.

That looks like a lighted control panel on that Zenith dryer. And by the color of it,I am going to guess that it was made between 1958 and 1963.
Does anyone know exactly what years Zenith was in the laundry business and were these actually Zenith made machines, or rebadged something elses?

Whirlpool?

Judging from the position of the lint filter, I would venture a guess that Whirlpool had something to do with that Zenith dryer, although it looks a little smaller than the Whirlpool lint filter access panel. Just a guess, and I could be dead wrong.

In 1957 I believe, Consumer Reports tested a Caloric dryer (GAS of course). It was just a flattop,no console.

The Zenith looks similar to an old Viking dryer my grandparents had. The console was shaped exactly the same and had the same two chrome posts with an indent down the middle. It did also have the lint filter on the top although the filter itself was not similiar to a Whirlpool filter so I don't think they manufactured the dryers for Viking.

Their Viking machine didn't have a start button so as soon as you turned the knob to select the time, the dryer started.

Runematic...

That Zenith dryer is one of the coolest old appliances I've seen in a long while. Can't help but wonder what the washer must have looked like inside. My family were fans of Zenith TV's and radio's but I never remember seeing any other Zenith appliances in the greater NYC area. You've inspired me to do some research. Thank you for posting that picture.

That Zenith dryer looks like the Franklin-made dryer that Western Auto sold under the Wizard brand. We took one out of a house several years ago. I was sort of an old Whirlpool design that had been modified a bit.
