I've always liked those machines. But I've heard so many stories of reliability/cleaning issues.
Wow. 15 years ago these and the Whirlpool version were everywhere. Now, it seems less than a handful show up each year. Great color on this one, too.

Calypso cleaning "issues" ... no such thing in my experience.
Whirlpool pulled a Maytag Neptune on these and didn't bench test them long and hard enough to work out the bugs before releasing them to the public. The public was the testbed, much like how Mercedes Benz and BMW operates.
A long time friend who was renting a room 18 years ago had these had they were constantly breaking down, replacing the control board and water pump....maybe something else. I remember them persistently plugging and unplugging the washer to get it to somewhat operate. I think the dryer was ok but it's too long ago now to remember. There's a good reason these are now more rare than a Maytag gray ghost wringer even though they have a good 80 years ahead of Clapso (what the appliance parts store called them).

Yeah, Maytag should have NEVER bothered with the Neptune machines. It literally caused them to go under, along with buying brands that ruined their own reputation as well such as Hoover, Norge, among many others. Pretty sure if Maytag never bothered with the Neptune machines along with buying companies that ruined their own reputation, they would still be around, definitely would square up Whirlpool since they would be steamrolled if they released their VMW machines while Maytag still made the DC machines that had a design which dates back to the late 1950’s. A Whirlpool VMW simply wouldn’t be able to compete with a Maytag DC on the sales floor.

However, they were one of the best cleaning top loaders ever sold in the US and they top the ratings and consumer reports for overall performance for a top loader.
Cleaning was never an issue with them by Calypso is used every time I do laundry for the dirtiest of dirty things, the dirty white socks, and things that are nearly black on the bottom come out white thoroughly rinsed.
The problem with the clip so with several as I’ve said before and post it was too complicated and too expensive to build, they never brought out a lower cost model, because the basic machine was just too expensive to make.
It was also ruined by the fact that use the Calypso name on both the Kenmore and the whirlpool version first time they ever did that it became too easy to paint both of them with the same brush when people had problems.
The pair here for sale. Look a little tired to me. If you want to get a Calypso try to find a very low mileage one, the dryers were never any real problem. However, the worst thing on both of them is the membrane control panels were not that good during this period And both of them are no longer available now.

John gave me a Kenmore version many years ago and it is a great washer and cleans very well. I have seen John dump a full load of his work clothes in his machine and it cleaned those very dirty clothes very well. I recall my surprise as I had never given a Calipso the time of day before I saw that one in action. Very impressive. However, in recent times I washed three bathroom rugs that nearly choked it to death, much to my alarm! As soon as I realized the rugs were straining it I stopped it and transferred those rugs to my 1964 A-300 Highlander. It had no problem with them at all.
The Calipso had never given a problem, and now it leaks. I have not been able to trouble shoot it yet, and feel like the rugs may have created a problem.
The only item I could not launder in it was a queen size comforter. It did not roll over at all and the center post threatened to rub a hole in the comforter. My 806 had no problem with it.
I think people tended to dump too much detergent into these machines and after a while the residual begins to create foul odors especially if they always leave the lid shut and /or used cold water for everything. A lot of them probably got tossed because of this.

The Calypso is certainly unique and interesting even if Whirlpool essentially stole it from a very, very old design that can be seen in Lee Maxwell's collection. If they worked the bugs out BEFORE production, it very well could still be around today. Alas, Whirlpool shot themselves in the foot and it's just another piece of history...yet again.
