That first set is not exactly a matched pair, the dryer has a newer console design.

I don't think any Calypso can be 4 yrs old being as they were discontinued from the market approx 2006. I think all Whirlpool units are designated as 2001 model-year (K). Has the last production date been verified?

" the dryer has a newer console design."

..and ideally, the washer would be better if it had the same design since (correct me if I'm not remembering correctly)..the newer panels are machines with updates or fixes from previous models(as the washer there).

Calypso Postings

Thanks for posting these nice machines Phil, these are truly modern classics.

You can't tell if the machines had the revised programing by style alone as they changed without restyling the consoles. The WP versions never went through a restyle and only the last KM version was ever restyled and they dropped the Calypso name from this last KM model.

I have the early KM version and actually prefer it as it does a faster longer spin after the wash cycle than the revised machines. Over all there were very few changes ever introduced on the Calypso washers, I think WP knew that this washer was doomed by the high cost of building it by the time it was introduced, which is probably why it never came out in a less expensive model, this was about the ONLY washer I can think of that came only ever came in ONE model.

I have the early KM version and actually prefer it as it does a faster longer spin after the wash cycle than the revised machines.
Interesting! What's the faster RPM? 800 RPM is highest I was aware Calypsos can spin, but I don't have much specific info on the Kenmore models.

2006 seems about right for the last of the Calypso's.....that's when I got my new set on clearance from Lowes.....even Sears had theirs too on clearance, but not as low of a price...

I like how people refer to the little agitator, as opposed to a whole wash plate that does the actual motion....they have no clue what goes on inside...

that's why I have a set, and a spare...of all the TL HE machines out there, this seems to be the best...

Calypsos

The spin is not any faster than 800 after the wash period and in fact it does not even go nearly this fast, I would guess 600 or so. But the revised models do not go nearly this fast after the initial wash or spin nearly as long, I guess they were worried about suds-locking ?. We rebuilt many of these and sold them, so I am sure I used more than 25 of them to do my laundry in over a several year period.

While I have quite a few stashed around the warehouse I am no longer selling them to customers as the parts have gotten a little too expensive and there are many other options for good used Hi-Efficiency washers now to sell. If someone in the club wants one that has been gone over I would still sell one to a collector, probably in the $300-400 range.
