I was wanting to know-I have two VHS-C square-bodied camcorders that work fairly well-and two others that you cannot make out the playback picture when you try to film with them-the two that I know work halfway decent-appear to have symptoms of bad capacitors-there is no fishy smell from them whenever I use them-just the normal electronics faint smell like a normal unit has. Will it hurt to keep using them like that?

They are 1990 model camcorders

I forgot to post-they are all 1990 manufacture camcorders-they are Panasonic, and GE units. The Panasonic Palmcorder and the GE Images-two PV-10D’s, a GE CG-690, and a GE CG-695-the CG-695 and one of the Panasonic PV-10D’s-they work fairly well-just lines in the viewfinder picture when filming-that shows up on the playback picture. Bad capacitors. I just hope it doesn’t leak electrolytic fluid out from the bad capacitors and destroy the circuit board from using them once in a while.

Fish oil capacitors

My two cents. It has been a long while since I’ve dealt with this.
Fish-oil type surface-mount electrolytic were (and still are) a cancer on compact electronics. Personally I don’t think that usage will change things much. I’ve seen camcorders of various brands develop physically leaky electrolytics that damage the board - even with no use.
Camcorder repair and replacement of the capacitors is not for the novice. I’m not saying that you are…. Camcorders are extremely difficult and tedious to repair, especially as they age.
I have the same issues. I have family videos that I want to still play. I buy cheap, working camcorders and transfer the videos as I can. When the camcorders fail I give to the recycler.
Just my two cents. I just remember those camcorders as being hair-pullers years ago. Can’t be easier to fix now.

Difficult to work on

You are right about camcorders being difficult to work on-I found that out really quick when I opened up a Magnavox CVL310AV01 square body camcorder that I bought to mess around with-it’s put together in a way that it would be a very involved process to work on.

I just hope that it won’t hurt to keep using them like that

I just hope that it won’t hurt them to keep using them like that with bad capacitors-like continuing to drive a car with a blown head gasket-or not changing the oil-eventually the engine will blow.
