Can Anyone Identify This Maytag Washer Model?

Saw this on craigslist, not sure of the model but as some of you know, my Maytag A606 died on me over two weeks ago.
This unit is not far from us if still available. Would the parts from this model work with our A606? Or if in good working condition maybe this one would be the one to keep.

Any advice/opinions would be appreciated

I think that is an A106?

Which would make it a single speed standard capacity washer.
It only has 3 water levels;
SMALL, MEDIUM, NORMAL (which would be large)

Your 606 is a 2-speed, large capacity washer.
It has 4 water levels;
SMALL, MEDIUM, NORMAL (which is large), LARGE (which is extra large).

I hope I got the model number right...

Will the transmission swap?  Nope, not that one.  Your machine has two speeds and the machine above has just one, as it's at the bottom of the model line.  I think any other model would have a compatible transmission.  The "Regular Action" and "Gentle Action" selector buttons are what you want to see on a donor machine.

 

Keep looking.  You may regret the decision to retire your faithful Maytag after using something else.

I will have to disagree with rp2813. The transmission will most definitely swap out, if the transmission in this machine is good. The motor or speeds of operation have nothing to do with the transmission. Any Maytag washer that is standard capacity of that vintage would have the same transmission and any Maytag washer of that vintage that is large capacity would have the same transmission of that vintage.

I think Hippiedoll is right------

that looks like a 106 to me as well. Should have the standard filter Gyratator in it, not a Power-Fin. I thought the HOT wash in those still gave a WARM Rinse. I have one tucked away, and it's been so long since I used it I can't recall.

Like Bruce say's, that tranny should be interchangeable. HOWEVER, I do think it will have a SLOWER occilation speed compared to a 606 of that era because of the Power-Fin.

A106 vs A606

The bottom half of the transmission in the A606 (large capacity) is shorter than the one in the A106 (std capacity), meaning the whole transmission is not a direct swap.  You can pull parts from the 106 trans (top, gears, etc), but that is about it.

 

The A106 in the photos is from the 70's.  By then the bakelite agitator was LONG gone, and the gear set was the same 63 OPM as the rest of the Maytag washer line.

I made an assumption that seemed logical to me, but didn't qualify it with "let's wait for the experts to comment."

 

I guess my post in your first thread was more accurate.  Maytags are like old VWs -- the guts from one will pop right into another (except when tub capacities are different, as Ben stated above).

What you could do, and I've done before, is change the complete cabinet, put in the 2 speed motor, and you will have all the features of a 606, except the larger tub.

MT A106 Washer

This washer does have a power-fin agitator, so the agitation speed is the same as an A606. It is a standard capacity washer however so only the top of the transmission can be used on a A606 [ the top is the part that usually fails on older MT washers ]

 

This A106 would still have the less desirable Hot wash Warm rinse water combination, so you have to reset the water temp switch after a Hot wash fill to get the more desirable better rinsing Cold rinse.

Well we can't get in touch with the seller so it doesn't matter now anyways.

We went and ordered a new Speed Queen today, the model with the mechanical dial.

I know it's new but I have been without a washer for three weeks. At least I feel good about buying it from a locally owned business and one owned by a veteran on Veteran's Day to boot.

But we are not giving up on the old girl yet. We will keep it through the winter and into the spring and keep looking for an old machine with a transmission hubby can swap.

If we cant find one I will have to find her a new home, I need the space in the basement.

I would rather post her here than on craigslist where she would be likely picked up for scrap. If we cannot find a transmission by the Spring I will post it here for free for anyone to pick up for parts or restore etc.

It is unique as it is Turquoise and it was purchased in the early 70's by my folks from a colleague at my dad's work place.

Hubby just took apart the bottom pulley, bearing and pulley are fine except full of grease.

Does anyone know the part number of that transmission, if there is one, that I should be looking for on ebay?

The 106 is a single-speed and 206 a two-speed AFAIK.
