Can Someone From Portland Rescue This???

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

They could not bother to take the wash OUT of them first? Or is showing the finished loads the seller's way of telling the public that they still work? Anyway, I hope somebody grabs them.

Have a good one,
James

I think he was showing the public that the machine still works. If that's the case, then it is definitely worth getting for someone who lives in the area.

I'm not familiar with the washer and don't know what all the excitement is about. Besides the above comments I know others think it's a good machine too.

I just wrote to ask if they are still available. I hope parts aren't a problem. I can only accept this as a replacement for a newer washer I want to get rid of.

GMMcNair if you see this post, did you get my email?

Someguy: If you want something that's actually worth a real monetary figure, then get this set off of Craigslist if it isn't gone yet. From the looks of the photos, the 1-18 is probably in working condition. If that's the case, then you can make some good money by cleaning up and selling both it and the dryer separately. Even if the 1-18 has issues, you can still make some good money just by selling some of its parts! In other words: If you must JUNK your newer washer to make room for the 1-18, then DO IT.

NFSouthern, thanks for your comments. I sent them email earlier today, haven't heard back yet.
The partial address they mention is tantalizing. It's not far. I think I could go there and start knocking on peoples doors. I guess it would be a race to see if I could find the right house before the cops showed up.

I haven't given any thought to monetary stuff, except as a general rule I try not to give too much of it away. Given your comment on value it makes sense to part out something to make parts available to those who need them.
But the only reason I'm involved at all is because I like certain old appliances. Much like my automatic washer I move in cycles. Currently I'm acting on a lifelong interest in washing machines. And I really like all the ones I have. (I hope my next compelling interest takes up less space.)

I'm impressed you'd advise me to dump a spiffy newer washer for that old 1-18. But I agree. And it's easy because although the newer machine works fine, it is damaged from probably being dropped and the basket lists substantially to one side.
One of the great problems I have with newer machines is the lack of reasonable manual control. I am getting more frustrated because machines think too much now. And boy are they stupid.
The other thing I don't like is I have to spend too much time thinking about how to operate things. Fetching a manual to figure out how to set a thermostat isn't what I want. etc. etc. sorry for the rant.

It's OK

I didn't mind your rant at all, someguy. Most of us feel the same way you do. I am sorry that the 1-18 and Kenmore dryer got away. But, there was another Craigslist ad posted a few months ago from the Portland area. There might just be another one. You never know! Meanwhile, keep an eye out for vintage Maytags, GE Filter Flos, belt drive Whirlpools, and belt-drive Kenmores. Also, older direct-drive Kenmores and Whirlpools with manual timers are a good choice and have proven reliability. They can usually be had for a song. All these are more common, and also have the types of controls you're looking for. Any Hotpoint Rim-Flo is fine too, as long as it works and doesn't leak fluids.

Avoid any plastic-tub GE made after 1995 or WCI (White Consolidated Industries) Frigidaire, as they are problem-prone. White bought GM's Frigidaire division back in 1980, and you can tell them by their strait-vane agitators. Also, GE stopped making the Filter Flo some time in the early 1990's. Keep us posted!
