Ok I read the manual
I'm a little confused. Is the tub full of water and the dishes are swished around or is there an impeller attachment that is trowing water up and around the dishes? Any pics out there in AW.org land?

Hazarding a guess here but I bet the "water distributor" is somehow alinged with the spin shaft and has a sort of "impeller" in the bottom. It looks like it would hold some water in the base, and they say to place it in the "dry" mode for air circulation. Similar to any impeller dishwasher of its day. I'm just not sure how they drained the water our of that base. The dish tub is probably open on both ends to allow it to fit over the base.
Clever idea, but fairly complicated.

The seller has contacted me and we're negotiating on the price. We're not that far apart. I asked if I could see the machine before settling on a price. The machine is currently located in the basement of a house that the seller owns that is currently rented. So, she has to make arrangements with her tenants for us to go in and look at it. Should be able to see it within the next week. Have already bribed my neighbor (okay, everyone, get your minds out of the gutter) to help me haul this machine home.

If you have to get it up stairs, be sure to remove the agitator, tub and the heavy balancer before moving it. Your back and other parts will thank you.
If you look at the water distributor, you will see a small tube on each arm. I believe that as the arms whirl, the tubes pick up water from the curved edge of the base and spray it against the dishes. I would surmise that they were at different distances between the outer edge and the center of the mechanism. A dealer who sold and serviced them said it was a better dish rinser than it was a dish washer. I only saw dishes done in one once in my life and I was about four and a half. All of the loading and washing was done by the maid before we (me, my mom and the lady of the mansion) entered the pantry or back part of the kitchen. The machine must have been in the DRY operation because I remember the dishes were jiggling slightly as they picked out each piece and toweled it dry while visiting. We moved to Georgia shortly after that so maybe it was a good-bye get together. I remember they had a green-tiled fountain in the entry hall where the staircase made a turn as it went up to the second floor.

Well, I emailed the seller the middle of this week, hoping to be able to see this machine in person and wrap up the deal, but like most of my date prospects, it's Friday night and I still have not heard anything back. So, unless I hear from her in the morning, I guess I won't be seeing and/or owning this machine this weekend.
I'm really hoping to wrap up this deal soon. The only bright spot in all of this is the longer she takes to get back to me, the longer I have for the snow to melt, which will make getting this machine in my house even easier.

Safe and sound at home
Well, thanks to my neighbor who helped me today, the Thor is now sitting in my basement. Fortunately, we were able to get it out of the basement where it was stored, onto the truck, driven to my house, into my driveway, and then wheeled to my back door to bring it down to the basement. Unfortunately, just as we were crossing over from the outside into the basement, the machine slipped off the dolly and fell to the floor. A small dent and some paint loss on the side, but nothing major.
Many thanks to Robert and the AW website for making it possible for me to own one of my dream machines.
The machine is currently not operating, but will keep you posted as the work progresses.

You're going to LOVE your Thor
I grew up with one, and it was always a fun machine to use. We could not afford the dishwasher part of it, but we had a friend who had the dishwasher. I watched her use it one time and, at a young age, was impressed with the way it cleaned the dishes. Fried egg had been sitting on the plates since early breakfast, and it was just before noon when the dishes were washed. No rinsing. They all came clean as a pin.
