Carpet Repair

That F-ing dog.
Yesterday my mother took her eyes off the Pup (seven months old yesterday) for only a minute as she was gathering trash for me to take out for trash day today.

As she was in the bathroom and bedrooms the pup was unsupervised, and she "dug" a hole in the carpeting about four inches in diameter. It did not go through the backing so the padding is intact, but there is a bare hole in my plush carpeting, and not in a un-noticable corner either; right smack dab in the main walking area.

I have been searching this morning and some websites says that you can patch a carpet. I have a closet in the bedroom that was carpeted with the same carpet as in the Livingroom, dining room, and hall so finding a donor won't be that hard.

Have any of you ever had any luck with patching a carpet. I can't afford to replace $10,000 worth of carpet at this time, I can't have a bald spot in my living room, but I want a repair that will stay as I have a strong vacuum (Kirby of course) that will pull up anything that isn't tacked down.

Advice???

Since you have a good donor area, a carpet company will be used to dealing with this issue. It seems always that something like this is in a conspicuous location so they plan ahead when the make the cut from the damaged area and the donor site.  I know that is disheartening. I suspect that once the do the replacement/graft it will not even be noticeable.

That's a tough one. It's relatively easy and fairly inexpensive to have it repaired. I enlarged a doorway and had to have about 4" square carpet patch done, it cost $45 to repair. The issue I see for you is matching the wear, unless the carpet is almost new the patch will look like a patch for some time, more so if you cleaned the carpet.

Michael,
The difference in the graft is it is in a closet, never exposed to the elements.
The damaged area is the main walk way, about four feet from the front door.

I am glad to hear it wasn't that expensive to repair. Whom would one contact, I was thinking someone that does carpet laying. I know it will look different, but I am hoping that at least it won't be a hole. This is a saxony plush carpet. I know I'm not crazy about the color, but it was in very good condition--until yesterday.

I just spoke with a carpet company. He will be out next week to give a firm estimate, but it doesn't sound like it will be that bad on Mom's checkbook (since it was her "f" dog). He said it would be around $150, if they did't have to pull back and restretch. From my description he thinks he will be able to patch and seam the donor piece into place.

And may I suggest a few inexpensive, long or large decorator rugs could be used to good effect here too.

Using 'runners' and rugs around front doors does several things too:

- defines the area as 'entry'
- can define a 'path of travel'
- helps keep street dirt from causing heavy soiling in a concentrated area - runners and rugs are easier to wash than carpet....and patterns disguise marks
- will preserve the carpet and probably double it's life
- will offer another barrier to the dog...especially if it soils

After modifying the layout of the flat below as much as I could (the left hand side of the yellow 'doorway' and the end of the red wall near the tall cupboard used to be a double 'pantry' cupboard into the kitchen and on the other side, a linen press in the hallway. Next to the far lightswitch used to be a doorway on the left). I asked the carpet people to put the carpet at an angle to define the kitchen area. My father thought I was bonkers and that the vinyl should have been 'squared off'....

However, that line on the floor effectively defined a non-existent doorway AND the line of travel down the hall. People used to come and talk to me in the kitchen NEVER crossed the line....
