I'm on the hunt for a good electrically powered one to use on our carpets, but want to be sure that I get something that is good. Which I would imagine generally means it has to be old enough to be good.

The vacuum unit is a Small Wonder (IIRC), and works quite well. It came with a little hand held turbine powered brush unit, which is basically worthless. Looking for an electrically powered upright unit.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?

Thanks,
Keith

The folks over in Vacuum land told me about this one. it was developed for central vacuums without electric power nozzle. it is based on the latest Electrolux power nozzle. it also is great for those who love vintage vacs. i Have had mine for about a year and a half and have no issues. it has all the power of a 120-volt power head. I really love mine with my Electrolux LX

I am very happy with my Turbocat rug nozzle from Central Vacuum Sales. It is very powerful and can be used with any hose ; no need for an electric one. The air to power the brush is sucked in on the top side of the nozzle so dirty air from the vacuuming process does not get into the drive mechanism. Since buying it, I have hardly used the electric rug nozzle.

I agree with Tom about Turbo Nozzles vs wired connected Electric Power nozzles. We’ve mostly used canister vacuums because we have stairs and its easier to use a canister vac in a home with stairs. For several years we had Kenmore canister vacs with wired power nozzles and on every one of the 4 different Kenmore's we owned it was the power nozzle that eventually failed because the wires inside of the hoses wore out and broke, severing the electrical connection. At first a replacement hose for these vacs was only about $25 to $35 but the last one we owned that had the hose go bad it was gonna cost over $100 to replace the hose.

So about 6 years ago we replaced the last Kenmore canister vac we owned with a Miele canister with a turbo floor nozzle and it also has a smaller turbo nozzle for the stairs. This little Miele canister cleans the carpets just as well as the Kenmore’s with the electric power nozzles and it will NEVER fail due to broken wiring in the hose.

We also have a Hoover Constellation canister vac that I purchased over 20 years ago that also has a Turbo nozzle and I cleans like a champ too.

No more electric power nozzles for us.

You need at least 120" of water lift and over 400 cfm to run a Turbocat. 540 air watts. The black Centech is the old Kenmore design with a nylon beater brush. There is a white model with a steel beater brush roll (begins with a n S) like a Beam Rug master. You can still buy those too. For delicate acrylic pile area rugs, you only want soft bristles and no beater bars. Wesselwerk makes both.

I've got 7 vacuums in the house for various areas.
Wet vac (2) - garage, basement, etc etc....
Eureka uprights (2) -upstairs, downstairs.
Eureka Mighty-Mite cannister
A handheld "Turbo-Tiger" for quick use.
And a Hoover Wind Tunnel "steerable" upright that has the small turbo brush that I use on stairs.
The only thing about that one is the accordian type hose likes to "shrink back" because of design.

I guess I should have included this information. The big ol' Beam power unit on the lowest level has plenty of power to run the Turbocat and provide enough suction to lift rugs.
Yes turbomatic, I think I was a bit restrictive about the needed power for a Turbocat. They sold me one initially back in 96 for the Hoover model 567. It couldn't run it once on the carpet. I think it's water lift was 105" and cfm 130. Even the smallest Beam was stronger. Since I had a great Eureka Vibragroomer I power nozzle, rather than exchange the Hoover, they exchanged the cheap hose with an MD total control electric 35' one, took back the Turbocat.
