Charlie's soap has some dedicated fans over on THS. I have never tried it, however, I have been interested in its compostion after hearing the rave reviews (not everyone, however, has raved about it).

Heretofore the company has been very secretive about what exactly Charlie's soap is. This has changed somewhat. From recently looking at the Charlie Soap website, it appears the product is a synthetic detergent using coconut oil as its long chain hydrocarbon feedstock. It also uses a "natural gas derivative", which most likely is an ethylene-derived alcohol/ethoxy sulfate used to turn oil into surfactant. There is nothing particularly unique about this. The powder has ordinary washing soda, which is inferior to STPP in most respects; laundry phosphates do a better job of softening water, preventing soil redeposition, breaking mineral based soild from fabrics. Washing soda is harsher, more alkaline, and hence may have better saponification, but that is probably not a significant factor in most applications.

What is important to recognize is that "Charlie's Soap" is not a soap, it's a synthetic detergent using coconut oil as the feedstock.

Incidentally, I am finding I am getting excellent cleaning results without the need for fabric softeners in my front loader by adding 2 oz of STPP with 2 oz of grated Ivory bar soap. I pre-modify the STPP by adding 10% by weight sodium metasilicate (to "protect" washer parts). I only use the soap in warm (105F) or hot (125F) water washing; I rarely if ever wash in cold water anyway. The net result is very clean, soft, fluffy laundry with a fresh non-perfumed smell, no dyes, no OBA's, no greasy fabric softener.

Warranty

I know nothing about the product, but I had to chuckle over the warranty:

"...but not gladly..."
