Anybody here remember the Chatty Cathy doll?

My younger sister got one in the early 60's. I remember it worked for a while but then kind of conked out. Somehow I wound up opening it up and inside was a little grammaphone - a little plastic disk and a needle to play it. At least that's what I remember. She was throwing a fit while I was dissecting the defective doll, lol, so it was hard to be sure.

Anyway, just saw a Geico commercial with a couple of Chatty Kathy dolls... "I dare you to pull that string one more time"...

I just caught that one the other night on NBC and I peed my pants laughing at it! I am glad someone in the world of advertising still has a sense of humour!!

June Foray provided Cathy's voice. I have a vintage model that no longer talks, but I snagged the Anniversary Edition (30th, maybe?) at the Goodwill, minty fresh. Mattel made some major improvements in the voice mechanism over the years.

One little bit of trivia is that later editions said "I hurt myself", while the first run said "That hurt!"

June Foray is

such a great vocal actor....she, is of course, "Granny" of the Tweety Bird cartoons, as well as being Rocky, and Nell Fenwick, and Natasha Fatale!

One person called her the "female Mel Blanc." Someone (maybe she herself?) said no, Mel Blanc was the male June Foray!!

The Martin Agency right here in Richmond has the contract for Geico. They are responsible for the cavemen, the Gecko, and of course, Chatty Kathy :) Those guys are great down there, and are responsible for lots of other pretty amusing TV ad's that are broadcasted out there

Does the 30th anniversery doll use a gramaphone player, or did they go digital with a little chip?
