Hi guys,
Can you help me find out about the approximate dates of origin of the following kitchen appliances:

Food waste disposers
Trash compactors
Microwave ovens
Dishwashers
Refrigerators with water and ice dispenser

The garbage disposal was invented in (I think) the 1920s for restaurant/commercial use. At the time, it was a hand-cranked meat grinder thing that sat on the drain board. The operator would grind the food into the sink and flush it away with water.

The first microwave ovens came out in the 1950s and were called "electronic ranges." They were big wall ovens, and home ec books of the period show girls using them to bake cookies on sheets of cardboard. These ovens were enormously expensive. The first countertop microwave was the Amana Radarange circa 1967. Still, it wasn't until the late '70s that microwaves really caught on with consumers.

Dates

Food Waste Disposer: Invented by General Electric in the 1935

Refrigerators with ice & water through the door: Invented by General Electric in 1969

Trash Compactor: Invented by Whirlpool in 1969

Dishwasher: Mechanical version invented by Walker Bros. in 1909 and the electrical version was invented by the Walker Bros. in 1913

Microwave ovens: For commercial use: Raytheon corp 1947. For Home use: Tappan in 1955 (they were built into the wall). Microwave/Range Combo General Electric in 1966. Countertop model by Amana (which was bought by Raytheon Corp. in 1965)in 1967.

Some of these dates may seem earlier than you may have thought but I have gotten these out of a couple different books.

Not to get too far off-topic, but anyone remember the Frigidaire refrigerators that gave ice, water, and juice through the door? Might even have given two different kinds of juice.

I think these were referred to as having the "Refreshment or Beverage Center". I have a manual that includes model info and remember seeing this mentioned. Can you imagine putting juices into a system dispensed through the door. Sounds like a big sticky mess! Would be cool to see for novelties sake though.

Frigidaire Refreshment Centers were around in the early to mid 70's. You filled two plastic containers with the beverage of your choice, which sat inside the door I believe. There was a knob on the outside, where you could adjust the strength of your beverage,by how much water was added.
Haven't seen one in many moons.....
