Media reports yesterday state Circut City will be closing numerous stores in various states to shore itself up.

The stores that are slated to close were closed today and will reopen tomorrow to begin selling off inventory at reduced prices. Passed our local store today and signs were up saying prices are reduced 20%-30% on inventory. Since the store was closed, on assumes it was one of the stores on the hit list.

Have been on a savings jag these past few months, limiting spending to essential items, and trying to stash away extra cash, but may stop by our local CC tomorrow and see what there is to see. Have been meaning to purchase a digital camera, and perhaps a DVD player/recorder and normally deal with Crutchfield's, however if prices are decent enough and can snag a deal or two.....

Good Riddance!

I worked at one for 2.5 years and am glad to see them go....my 'gal pal' char worked in appliances and when the store we worked in closes (it's not yet on the closing list) we are taking a Victory Lap around the place!!

Our local news revealed that CC is closing 150 stores nationwide. CC was popular here when they first opened, but when they dropped the appliances, they became ghost towns. High prices, inexperienced and surly sales staff all kept people away.

I predict that Circuit City will be gone by the end of the year.

Agreement on the change in CC

I stopped shopping them once the dropped appliances as well. I agree that they had much to learn on customer service, no pressure sales and loyalty programs such as those that Best Buy has been successful with.

I say thank god. As a small businessman I buy as much as possible from local merchants. Now that being said, around here we do not have a local computer store (at least none that actually prices the computer rationally). I finally decided to update the technology in the office. I ordered Comcast hi-speed internet (& finally ditched dialup) so I needed a computer w/ an ethernet connection. My 8 year old Gateway was maxed out, so after much web shopping, I ended up going out to CC (about 25 miles away). I've bought a lot of computers and accessories through that store over the years. They had a nice HP w/ a price that I liked. After waiting & waiting to get waited on (the store was fairly empty), I finally had someone come over. After this nitwit finally waited on us, all the "free" associates came out of the woodwork to hang around the employee computer station. This guy knew nothing, not what was on sale, what came with the package, how to ring up the sale, etc. The offer in the ad came with an upgrade to a wireless all-in-one printer. The assoc. didn't want to do it because he didn't know how to do it & quite frankly didn't want to. Then he didn't want to take my company check. He really resisted that one, even with our delivery truck sitting right outside the window. We were just ready to leave & go across the street to Best Buy, when he finally got our check to go through. After spending about $900 & almost an hour we got a brush off w/ no thank you so he could wait on some young chickie. He handed me the reciept and walked away. I tell ya, I thank everyone that comes throuh my store whether they buy something or not. We should've left, but I liked the computer compared to Best Buy. I say buh bye to CC.

Funny Thing.

CC just bought a property here on Cape Cod. Tore it down, and is 3/4 of the way through building a new one. Some days you see guys there working, but then you don't see them for days. Hmmmmmmmmm. Wonder what's up there ??????

I applied for a job at the Circuit City in San Bernardino way back in the early 1980s. The interviewer asked "So, what are you good at selling?"

"Computers!"

"Oh. Well, we've seen the kind of people who want to own a computer and I don't think that's the kind of people we're trying to attract."

Rest in peace, a-holes.

The Lighter side of Sears

Sears is on the brink too check the stock market its SHLD, the real estate of Sear/Kmart is worth more than the business. Its a horrible thing for folks that could lose even more Jobs. alr2903

I much prefer Best Buy to Circuit City. However, I try to support the smaller shops when I can. I also run a small printshop, and last night made some musical guitar related purchases at a small shop. I've been trying to get them as a customer, and told them that. Lo and behold I have 2 quotes to do. That's my philosophy, one hand washes the other, and that's how you build business relationships.

IIRC

Circut City at one time had really great sales staff, but they were on some sort of commission arrangement. Management changed things and or got rid of seasoned sales staff, and, well you know what they replaced them with.

Never really liked CC or even BB becuse they charge a restocking fee. Crutchfield's OTHO is a pleasure to deal with.

Sears Has Been On Death's Door

For ages now, and unless they pull up their socks, K-Sears will be gone as well.

Sears really had a strong point in parts, repairs, and appliances, but they have let the big box stores steal their thunder. At one time something like 7 out of 10 homes purchased their appliances at Sears. This despite their criminal credit card interest rates.

Time was Kenmore appliances stood for quality and value. Many an Amercian housewife ran her Kenmore appliances hard with large families and they kept on keeping on.

I just got an amazing deal in the Livingston, NJ store (that is closing) on a digital camera. Now you will see quality picture posts from me in the future.

We've Been Spared!

The CC here in Springfield won't be closing. And, just like pturo, I got a fantastic deal on a Canon A540 camera (it was a display model) back in May of '07. They knocked down the price an additional 10.00. I paid a little less than 125.00 (with tax).

Stopped By Local CC Store Earlier

Looked at display models and what was left of digital cameras, however for the models one was interested in (Canon A1000, A2000, Panasonic Lumix's) and a few others, prices were not that much better than one can find on eBay, Dell, or a few other online retailers.

May go back tomorrow, now that one has spent some time researching models and see what there is to see.

Part of my hesitation is the fact prices are only reduced 10% for digital cameras, with some better deals on open box items. However many of the open box items are missing bits that replacing will drive up the total cost. Also with the economy the way it is, and everyone predicting at worst a ho-hum holiday shopping season, have a late December and early January may bring some great sales on electronics.

Don't Forget Sales Tax

Which is the one thing holding many shoppers back here.

NYC and NYS add about 8.25% sales tax, so ten percent reduction in price will only give a price slightly removed from the original. Mind you on high priced items like HDTVs and such, the discount can add up, but from what one has seen at our local CC, they aren't moving fast either.

The End May Be Near

Circuit City declared Chapter 11 this morning. But they were able to secure DIP financing which will allow them to continue operating. Somebody somewhere must believe in them.
I didn't know that Blockbuster tried to buy them awhile back, but backed out of the deal.

poor CC

well in my neck of the woods after opening a huuuuuuuuuge nice one they are well closing it down we got a sweet deal on a blu ray dvd player and a butload of dvds!

Problem with this CC sale is that at least around these parts, their prices are way above other stores.

Case in point, CC sells the Canon A2000 digital camera for about $170. One can go to BH Camera, Best Buy and many other places and find the same item for $140 to $160.

Ten percent off CC's already inflated prices just isn't cutting it far as one is concerned. Yes, there are some deals to be made, but one has to do one's homework first.

At our local, DVDs, DVD players and such are moving fast and or sold out. Same with small electronics and "Game Boy" stuff, the big ticket items like HD televisons, receivers, and the like are moving slowly.
