Clean your G-D Coin traps! Please

well, working on my next project a 1955 Combo I went to clean out the cointrap. Would NOT budge! This is gonna need to soak, says I. So I poured 2 quarts of hot water into the MINT tub. Waited,waited some more ,,,waited then finally 1/2 hour later a few drips come out the drain hose!

1/2 hour no lie! So I poured more hot water on, and left, it had to soak over nite for all the water to return to the catch. Today I had to pry the cointrap out with a long screwdriver. See what was pried out with a 2 foot screwdriver!!

They must have run this machine for 10 years! The lint was impacted up into the drum back into the down spout for the aircirculation -condensor tube!!

I've got a newer GE, and a newer Hotpoint that were both traded in. Both had pump problems. After inspection, one had 2 quarters jamming the impeller, and the other had a ball of lint in the pump, jamming it.

Perhaps it tis a testement to my laundry skills, or just types of laundry done in my Miele, but in all these years have yet to find much of anything in the coin trap. Will say cleaning it out today after seeing this thread reinforced my theory of sticking to "HE" detergents only. Left over muck and oils not totally cleaned/rinsed from laundry sits in the sump and begins to, well rot. Even with every other daily use and several of those loads at 140F, stuff settles down and is not always flushed out with the next laundry day.

All that lint from the drying process ends up in the pump screen. The book recommends it be cleaned after each washday but some people obviously don't read the book!

That's nasty - it reminds me of the lint globs inside the Maytag combo that was used as a dryer only for many years. I've checked the screen in my GE combo and it seems to do a fairly good job of getting rid of the lint (down the drain - NOT on my socks) but I did find a dime and a penny. The Westy combo has never had a speck of lint or crud in it.

I took my own medicine and ran the 58 Combo on Soak, first go through clogged with red lint from the sheets,so its now on another go through!

I guess I didn't read the G-D manual either--guilty as charged!

Well atleast my socks will be clean again.....

I got a 24" L.G.combo that won't quit!It's 8 years old and was found in front of a $12 million house in Winter park.I replaced the hoses and rubber seals and reaved it up.The average cycle(using 10 pounds of dirty clothes)takes 2.5 hours.

I keep my lint trap very clean always wash it off every time on the top load washers

On the Haier FL I check it every few months to make sure it is clean
not too hard to do

1: Flip access door down
2: twist lint knob counterclockwise
3: Pull filter out thusly
4:check and clean throughly
5:slide back in machine
6: Twist lint knob clockwise to lock
7: wash clothes again

And I got the IQ of a vegamatic (this is a joke I say when I am doing something complicated so take it with a grain of salt)

As I was reassembling components last nite I was under the machine when another huge dry gob of lint flittled down the chute right in my face! So I pulled it out and it just kept coming and coming. I had a glob 3 times the size of my fist in seconds!
This machine is gonna need a serious G-D flushing out before it ever sees soap or the dry cycle!

I wonder why there is so much lint in that one - perhaps it's defective. The 57 I parted out had almost no lint in any part of the machine, condenser tube, heater box, etc.

Maybe it's a gas combo and you didn't notice?

I think I would have noticed THAT lint filter at the TOP of the MACHINE.

Like you said somelady didn't read her manual for TEN YEARS.

I just hope its not jammed all the way through the system up to the heater box otherwise its dryer fire time again in old Melrose. Just like when Robert set fire to my 1959 Filtrator and Don and I had to drag it out of the house.

My 58 was spotless to all the way through that splash fill really kept it clean. And thats what I have to assume here too that the splash fill kept flushing it all down to the bottom.

Interesting tidbit:

On my '65 RCA Whirlpool, it actually has what is called a "button trap" between the tub drain and the pump. It looks like it might old about 8 oz.

On the '71 Lady Kenmore, there was no such device - the tub drain goes to the pump, and from there to the lint filter or drain exit.

Wonder why they decided to eliminate the button trap by '71?

Our 1975-76 Whirlpool LDA7800 still had the pump protector/manifold, integrated as part of the self-clean filter.
