Cleaning a washing machine

There are all sorts of products on the market for dishwasher cleaning but none (that I am aware of) for washing machines. I have just acquired a Hoover Nextra 1400 h-axis TL machine that is only a year old and I want to make sure it is clean inside. There is a tiny bit of limescale on the drum but my water is MEGA soft and will take care of that over time. However, I want to clean the outer tub etc. I have never done a maintainance wash in my life and don't intend to start doing it regularly but would like to do one to this machine, as I have just gotten it.

What do you all use for this? Detergent? Borax? Ammonia? Salt? Lemon Juice? DW detergent? White wine?

HELP PLEASE??

Hi Hoovermatic, congratulations on your new machine. I have had great succses with Dr.Beckhann service-it washing machine cleaner. It's a liquid, you pour it into the washer and run a 60 cycle. It has really cleaned up the inside my machine's. You can get it at Tesco or Sainsbury's. Hope this helps

AH!! so there IS a product on the market! I had no idea, probably cos I am never on the lookout for it. THANKS for the advice, am off to Sainsburys tomorrow afternoon so will pick some up

So far I am very pleased with the machine. My last machine had a quick wash of 90 mins duration and this one has a choice of two at less than half that time. It also has an AA wash at 40 degrees although it takes about 3 hours!! Still I will give it a go. It seems to use a lot less water and therefore electricity which is all good in my book! Cleaning and rinsing seems A+, which is pretty much the energy rating it has!

Hi there glad your pleased with the machine, not sure who makes them but I don't think it is Hoover.I had a modern Zanussi aquacycle top loader that I gave to another friend/collector and I was very pleased with it as he is. When your in Sainsbury's looking, it's in a white box with a washing machine on the front, I can't remember if it was with the descaling products or the vanish, stain remover type products.

no need to buy products

If you use your machine properly then there should never be a need to clean the machine or waste money on washing machine cleaning products.

You should regulary do a service wash, basically a boil wash with biological washing powder... however you can get away with not doing this if you do regular 60C washes for your whites... 60C water kills and destroys bacteria which causes mold. Use powder over liquid and dose correctly.

Leave the door open ajar when not using the machine so the inside can dry out and air can circulate.

Im using a 31 yr old hoover washing machine, it gets used 3 times a week and it hasnt got a trace of mold, mind you I do 1 60C wash weekly for my whites.

If you have hard water you might get calcium build up on the heating element, even if you use the right amount of detergent. Citric acid is very good for removing it and it's not too harsh on the other materials.

Late St Nicholas delivery: Constructa CA 801

Today my St Nicholas gift was delivered. It's a compact H-axis toploader. It washes and it rinses automatically, but it doesn't spin, so you need a separate spindryer. This machine is from the 70's. It has three controls and a button for a rinse hold so you can add softener for the last rinse.
