Cleaning The GE

Greetings everyone how’s it going? Today I am cleaning the washer. The inside of the agitator needed some desperate attention, so I purchased a toilet brush to clean it. While cleaning, I noticed some black particulate matter floating in the water. I purchased a fish tank net to scoop it out. I always check pockets before loading pants and shorts into the washer. If anyone has any feedback on what this is and how to rid the machine of it, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thankfully, it’s lasted four years with trouble-free service. Hopefully it will make it to five.

I think what you are seeing is just the crud (junk, dirt, stuff, grime - pick a name ?) that seems to accumulate on the inside surface of the outer tub. Usually much more prevalent in the upper 1/3 or 1/4 of the tub. Most consumers will wash for a decade or the life of their machine and never see it nor even know it's there.

Our main Kenmore top loader is over 25 years old and has never once had the tub out to do a thorough cleaning. I'm sure it needs it but; out of site out of mind...

I doubt you need to do anything more. Nevertheless, if you want to go towards that top perhaps 1 to 5 percentile clean, you could figure out how to remove your inner tub and see what it looks like. I would NOT recommend it since you just did a cleaning and we can see that you take pride in your clean washer.

Cleaning the GE

I actually just cleaned our GE there is very similar to this one. I actually used 2 cups of fryer boil out with hot water, two hour soak, and deep fill on the whites heavy cycle. Our machine did not have as much “scrud” as this one appears to have, though it was dirty. I might have to try affresh next time.

I recommend using it. The pucks are scented, however they are lightly scented. I’ve tried Tide washing machine cleaner before. Afterwards the whole house smelled like Tide.

We use..

1-2 cups of citric acid and a tablespoon of baking soda depending on how dirty the washing machine is, hot water setting and run it through a regular cycle. These are the 2 main ingredients in all of your washing machine cleaner tablets, for a lot cheaper. You can buy bulk citric acid on Amazon.

Cleaning Automatic Washers

It is never a bad thing to clean a dirty washer, however I have never cleaned any washer that I have used in my life. And when I have had to occasionally to take apart one of my machines for major service there has never been a smidgen of any dirt, soil, or mineral deposits to clean.

 

If you are using the proper amounts of detergent, hot enough water and bleach etc helps you will not only have a clean washer but your clothing will actually be clean.

 

Remember if the washer is getting dirty your clothing is not getting as clean as it should.

Bottom part of agitator

Hi my parents have this same exact model washer. When I cleaned the fabric softener dispenser , I noticed this same buildup in the lower part of the agitator. I do not like how the bottom part is open, in past models it was not. that's where the black build up is , if you look down in there you will see it. I would run it through some hot washes with a cleaner. It is very hard to get down in there.
