cloudy glassware

Hi, my glassware is often cloudy. Wash results are excellent but rinsing could be better.
I'm using a De Dietrich 8.P20(?)about 6 years old - 1 pre-rinse, 2 65 c washes + 1 55 c wash, rinses and dry.

Hard water supply but there's plenty of salt in the softener, turned to max output.

I'm using Morrisons (store brand) cyclon 5 in 1 and Tesco (store) rinse aid, citrus.

Rinse Aid...

I have tried various rinse-aids over the years (two decades!), and have come to the conclusion that the top-brands are best: no exception!

Use "FINISH", or "FAIRY" rinse-aids/drying agents, and don't use anything else.

I tried the Co-Op's own rinse-aid, and Tesco's. They both were not up to the same gleaming standard as Finish.

Detergent...

Switch to Finish powder or 'Classic' tablets , or Fairy 'Activebursts'/'Powderbursts'.

Some of the multi-function tablets can cause serious overfoaming; and the rinse-aid components in the tablets get released at the wrong times.

A dishwasher cleaning action requires following a rigid process of chemical interactions. Detergent is alkaline, rinse-aid is acidic, so they should be kept separate from each other, as they are when separate detergents and rinse-aids are used.

Use the Finish tabs.They're the same as Electrosol Tabs here in U.S.Cascade is usualy the culprit for filming on clear see through glassware. I stopped using it decades ago and haven't had that problem since. The water temperature also needs to be at least 150F.

In general, with Cascade here in States, if glassware is cloudy you are either using too much or too little diswasher detergent.

If the cloudyness wipes off the glasses, you are using too little detergent. If the cloudyness does not wipe off, you are using too much, and etching the glassware.
Also, you could be over pre-rinsing the items you put in the dishwasher. The newer detergents contain enzymes, which break down soil, especially protein. If you have an immaculately rinsed load and add all the dishwashing detergent, you are not doing your glassware any favors by pre-rinsing the dishes at the sink.
Wipe off anything larger than a turkey carcass from the dishes,add grimy pans, add the glassware and detergent, and hope for the best.

Too clean a load does not work with the newer detergents, and you will see the results on your glassware.

Thanks for the help. Just as I thought, 'scrimping' on decent detergent does not pay off. I will switch back to Finish powder and use Fairy rinse aid.

Turn the salt down !

I was told on a Miele training course over softened water containing excessive salt dosent help. I live in a hard water Area( think white cliffs lol ) and the factory setting thats under half way is fine. Miele actually mix softened and tap hard water on the glasses programme to counteract this problem. Also id agree on combined tabs not helping either ;-) Seamus

If your hard water is being softened by the dishwasher effectively, and your glassware is cloudy, and that cloudiness cannot be removed by washing in vinegar or cream of tartar, then you are using too much detergent. Soft water (not naturally soft water, but softened water) requires little detergent to clean well, but too much will result in the chemical etching you are seeing on the glasses. Most likely, that cloudiness can't be removed. If it can be removed, then you may be using too little detergent in your wash. Try to remove the clouding, then go from there.

With the softener on max and the combined tabs theres prob more salt in the water than the dead sea lol ! ;-)

Hi, thanks again, I will turn the salt down..just put it up about 3 weeks ago!

The cloudy film polishes off completely, leaving really sparkling glassware...so...I'm changing my detergent..now! I never really liked the idea of 'all-in-one' tabs.

Thanks, I'll turn the salt down...and I'm changing detergent.. now.
The cloudiness polishes off completely, leaving really sparkling glassware, thank goodness they're not being etched.
So..better detergent, lower salt(you know it makes sense!) and we'll take it from there..will have to wait for current fill of rinse aid to run out and try Fairy.

I got cloudy glassware when I used Jet Dry. I use NO rinse agent now. I just use Cascade pure rinse powder and have no cloudy glassware

Funny I never liked the feeling of the dishes when using jet dry. Haven't used it for over 20 years. I use Cascade Complete powder High temp wash and heated dry. No water on anything and no unsightly water marks.

I tried Finish Quantum recently having used Sun All in One for the last few months and the results were not as good.

I am switching straight back to sun All in one!

None of the major brand dishwasher tablets will damage glasses anymore. It's really important that you use a fairly good quality one if you're washing a lot of glassware or delicate items.

The newer and pricier detergents i.e. Finish, Sun, Fairy active bursts etc all rely on a cocktail of enzymes to do most of the tough dirt breaking. Cheaper products can be rather caustic and can etch glass. This eventually results in the glassware turning cloudy. They're old and outdated formulas that have long since been abandoned by mainstream manufacturers for their premium detergent products.

Check the ingredients of the product too!

Any product that contains Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic soda) should be avoided at all costs! This is what older dishwasher powders used to rely on to breakdown proteins and fats..
