1990s Electronic Maytag Pair

These were fairly rare but do show up once in a while, I saw a pair on the junk pile the other month with the much more desirable dark colored control panels but let them go to scrap. The controls on both the washer and dryer were very versatile and easy to use but at the end of the day both the washer and dryer were pretty average performers.

The washer can be helped a great deal by adding a Load-Sensor agitator and a 50 Cycle motor pulley, the dryer is the typical MT SOH dryer and I have never found any way to improve its drying speed and overall performance. When Maytag redesigned the SOH dryer into the 27" wide platform these worked much better, between the more durable  blower and improved air flow. Also the smaller diameter drum in the newer 27' design also seemed to really speed up drying as the air didn't go right through the middle of the tumbling load like in the Larger SOH dryers.

If only the dryer was gas

Ben it is not that difficult to convert this dryer to gas if you really want this dryer, just part out a similar age MT dryer, we have done this at least 50 times going from electric to gas and gas to electric.

I remember my old MT representative who moved from Iowa with a MT Highlander gas dryer to Maryland to a new all electric house in Annapolis. So rather than buy a new dryer he just ordered the parts from MT and converted it to electric [ he left the gas burner assembly in place and saved the extra parts in case he ever moved again to a house where he could have a gas dryer again ]. One time when he was away on business his wife said the dryer had stopped heating so Richard called a local MT service Co. to fix it. When the young guy went down to the basement he popped open the little access door for the gas burner and declared to Richards wife , lady your pilot is out, not even noticing that there was no gas line and there was a 240 dryer cord plugged in above the dryer. LOL

That's a great story John!  I can only imagine the look on the guys face when he finally took a second look.

If the dryer wasn't a digital machine I wouldn't hesitate if I really wanted to convert it. The concern I have is the low voltage controls and if there were gas specific parts in there or not.

I'd have to check the parts books - BUT, I'm still holding out for a more local one.
