How did this thing work on ice trays?  Any approximation of its vintage?

Ralph,

It looks like it probably worked as a detachable handle to lift the mechanism on the metal ice trays that broke the ice into cubes to be removed from the ice tray for use. Kind of like the same idea as the detachable Corningware cookware handles. The slot at the wide end would have been the bottle cap opener.

I wonder, could it have been used to pry the tray from the floor of the freezer if it got stuck from thaw/freeze when it was put in there? I seem to remember that happening on my grandmother's fridge.
