Found this closed ebay auction tonite--my grandparents had this exact model on their outdoor sunporch in Big Sur from 1958 until moving in the early 1990s. It was HOT in that location. This was plugged in and never shut off during all those decades. Never serviced. You couldn't kill it if you wanted to. Last I heard, the people they gave it to still had it (circa 2005) and it was still running. WHAT can you buy today that can say this?

I swear cold cokes in bottles tasted better from this fridge. I loved it. The sound of that chrome door latch closing is unforgettable. A well made beast, despite not being the priciest thing made at the time!

Someone did a nice restoration on this, despite it looking a bit like a Brunswick bowling pin (to my eyes...).

But sheeples arent supposed to know this! Just keep buying new "energy efficient" models every five years. Hell thats how long new ones usually last anyway.

3.5 Amps

Seems high to me, assuming 50% duty cycle (probably high) and $0.11/kwh that is over $200 a year. Who knows how they picked this spec for the tag. In real life I bet it runs way under that current level though.

In any case you can't gleen efficiency from consumption unless you know the output cooling capacity. I'd go out on a limb and bet that most any new fridge will have a higher BTU/watt cooling efficiency. Probably better insulation too.

New units being self-defrosting will have high current ratings based on draw when the heaters cycle.

The new units in no way have the panache that this unit has though!

Energy Consumption Of Refrigerators

You can't go by the rating tag to calculate energy consumption, Most new Refs draw less than 1.5Amps when running, this includes the compressor and fans. Even a 48"wide Sub Zero is under 2 Amps when running today. Most newer FF refs run about 1/2 the time in a 70 degree room, older 60s and 70s FF Refs could run about 60-70% of the time under similar conditions.

It always makes me laugh when people say things like new Refs will only last-average 5 years of life with absolutely no evidence, just when did this change occur?.

Today I repaired a 2001 Frigidaire SXS, it needed a new IM, I fixed it for about $200, then I worked on a basic 2000 GE TF model that had a clogged defrost drain, fixed for about $100, then I did a 1993 Amana SXS that was have trouble defrosting, turns out that a house guest was not closing the ref door completely [ it had already recovered by the time I got there ] cleaned and serviced for about $100. On all three of these Refs this was the first service ever required and I would predict that any of them could last at least another 10 years. Note both the SXSs had computer defrost controls, the TF GE just a regular timer.
