While much of this is many months away yet I want to let people know some of the changes I am going to be making.

First as most of you know I'm working on the mechanics of the site. I'm updating to a more modern style database system. I'm hoping to be able to have a much better way of searching through the old postings eventually and not have to rely on Google.

There will be two types of memberships, standard and upgraded. With standard memberships everything you can do today you can still will be able to do, read and post in Imperial, Deluxe and Super. POD and Libraries, etc.

Upgraded memberships will have access to new features, I haven't decided or researched what its going to take programmatically to create all these new features but here are just a few things that I'm thinking of, nothing is definite but some will be implemented:

The ability to delete or edit your posts after they have been posted.

Display all times in your own time zone.

Controlled chat Room, by controlled I mean you will have to use your real log-in name to enter. You wont be able to make anything up like we used to have.

Sticky posts to keep them at the top of the Index List for a while.

Being able to click on another member and view all their recent postings on one page.

Oh yes and at this point I'm leaning towards opening up the Super Forum Archives back to the beginning to all upgraded members.

I'm sure I'll come up with other things too.

The biggest change is the Super Forum is going back to what it was originally meant to be. I'm going to add two new forums now. Both of these forums will only be accessed by upgraded members, over 18 years old. One forum tentatively called "Dirty Laundry" any posts that get unduly heated such as one we have going on today ***rolls eyes*** will be moved to Dirty Laundry. DL will be for any type of subject that is controversial such as Politics, Religion or Sex, etc. Archives will not be available for Dirty Laundry and I might keep the Index List to like 50 or 25 threads before they fall off. No controversial threads will be allowed in the public Super Forum any more.

The other private forum which I have no idea what to name yet but something like "As the Wash Tub Turns". This forum will be for general chit chat about your life, the weather, happiness or sadness you are experiencing, your job, partner, wife, husband, etc.

Again any thread in Imperial, Deluxe, Super or As the Wash Tub Turns that gets overly heated, gets moved to Dirty Laundry.

For those who post things like "I hardly post around here anymore because of these political threads", you wont have to see them because you can simply stay out of Dirty Laundry. I still expect some sense of decency in DL like no sex pictures or naked pictures or homophobia or racism will be allowed but at the same time I wont pay it much mind.

I think this will help bring the aw.org in the 2010's and beyond and I think this is being fair to everyone. It will keep all the important stuff (you know washers, dryers and dishwashers) open to the public, and it will allow anyone who chooses so to still converse on other topics, but not display them to the whole world.

Becoming an upgraded member will involve supporting the costs of running this site via small yearly fee like $12.00 or $15.00, something minimal like that, and it will generally help keep the under 18 crowd in the 3 on-topic forums only as generally they do not have credit cards to pay with.

Again I repeat this is not something that is going to happen tomorrow. Its going to take at least six or months as I have a day job and a partner who always will come first so I will program at a slow pace whenever I feel like it.

Oh and yes I'm still open to ideas for new features as well as names for the two new forums (but I do like Dirty Laundry lol).

Awesome!!! I can't wait for the upgrades to slowly poor in! Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo much for all you do Robert! I'm as addicted to this site as I am Facebook. And that is saying something. lol

Dirty laundry!

Great sounding name! I thought so too

These ideas seem like much needed new changes to me, Robert.

I never bother to look at "Deluxe", so I will not miss "Dirty Laundry",or "As the Tub Turns" either.

Thanks for what all you do here.

Suggestion:

I don't know whether this works for both standard and upgraded memberships, but one feature I'd love is being able to sort the post order within a thread, plus one other option I'll get to in a second. A thread that gets a lot of posts might have over a hundred replies, and being able to sort on "Newest Posts First" would really save some scrolling.

The other is a "text-only" option, to save the loading of pics when you've already seen them, or are on a wireless device, or whatever. This could conceivably save some bandwidth charges for you, too.

'As the Wash Tub Turns'

That is cute Robert, but I am partial to top loaders and would like to suggest something along the lines of 'who is agitating now' or 'my knickers are twisted'.

Anyway, it all sounds good. Especially the post edit button. Sometimes I have brain farts and would like to make them go away before they get up someone's nose.

Take care and thanks for all your efforts.

Olav

Yay- That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for

Sandy those are both just wonderful ideas, I will add them to the list. With a database style system they should not be too hard to implement, with a file base system they would nearly impossible.

Robert, All these coming changes you listed sound fantastic! I very pleased to hear you are creating a couple of other forums like Dirty Laundry (AWESOME name BTW!) and.... umm.... how about "As the spinner turns"?? LOL

I REALLY like (dare I say love?) this website. I really appreciate you Robert and everything you've done here!

Thank you so very much!
Kevin

Robert,

Thank you for keeping the Super forum open (i.e. - not a members only area), and for setting up a separate area for off topic discussions. Since I do not own a vintage washer/dishwasher, Super is the only forum that I participate in (with a very few exceptions). I also think it is important to keep it publicly accessible for those who seek information on refrigerators, stoves, and small appliances. That is how I found this site and is the main reason I joined. As I rarely participate in political discussions, I plan to upgrade simply to help you with costs (and for the edit function).

Thanks, Robert, This is Good to Know.

Very sensible. I look forward to enjoying the results of these practical changes in general, along with any Web accessibility modifications. Please feel free to browse these Web resources, as you will find loads of helpful gems to use while going about your programming work on this site. This club and Web site are literally loads and loads of fun to me, and it would be at least as interesting and informative to a wider array of computer users: blind, visually impaired, various operating systems/platforms, etc. Thanks so endlessly for what you are doing.--Laundry Shark

I don't have nay issue with these proposed changes, but I don't know if I'd want to participate in the new forums.

However, as I recall, the Super forum was originally intended to be a place where anything could be discussed - hence the slightly hidden nickname of "Sandbox".

Be that as it may, I'm happy this is a dynamic and responsive environment.

What ever you decide I will always blow you a kiss in the wind.

Thanks for all of your hard work Robert!

You are a gem.

Brent
