Compact 120v Dryers - Vintage Any Better Than Today?

It has been years since one had anything to do with a small/120v dryer, but was wondering if today's versions by Whirlpool/Kenmore and GE are any better than vintage dryers from say the 1970's on.

Today's models sell for over $350 but seem to have features found on their bigger brothers such as: automatic drying sensors, quieter motors and suspension (no drum rollers), and in some cases greater airflow due to larger "grate" in back of the drum. Still at the end of the day one is speaking of rather limited heating power, so really how much of a difference can there be?

I've got a Mid-1990's Kenmore Compact Portable Dryer and it puts out the Exhaust, 145-Degrees/F Heat, accorging to my putting a Meat Thermometer at the opening.

It also has the Electronic Sensor, below the Lint Filter Grill, just like it's Brother's have. If I use the High Spin on my LG Washer/Dryer {1400-RPM} it can dry a load of pretty heavy items in 45-minutes to 1-hour and it seems to be a pretty accurate drying of all items. It does have a somewhat short Cool-Down on the Auto Cycle, so I do have to be careful with getting items out right away, if I don't want them to get wrinkled.

I bought it 2nd Hand for $100.00 and it is actually my 3rd Model owned. The first one was a mid-1970's Model that is still going strong. I gave it and the matching Washer to a Friend and neither of them have ever had any Repairs done on them. My 2nd Model Set are an early 1990's, I just sold a few years ago, when I got my LG Compact Combo, before getting the Kenmore Dryer. They've never ever had any Repairs on them either. I've got my Kenmore sitting on top of my LG and use it instead of the LG for more Laundry Drying, because of the extensive length of time the LG takes, for Wash, Dry and Cool-Down {7-hours} total.

Automatic Drying Sensors.

IIRC An automatic Dryer Cycle is Required by Law. I Have actually Seen BOL dryers with an Automaitc cycle and Without a timed Cycle.

And it works great.

As long as it's connected to a gas-line... LOL...

I have acutally heard that in hot, dry climates a dryer will work outdoors without any heat.. *LOL* It may just take a little longer.

Thanks for all your input, cecided to spring for "new" and go with a GE "Spacemaker". The new line is no longer has the standard Whirlpool/Kenmore design with a small kidney shaped lint filter in back of the drum. Rather GE has redesigned their small 120v and 220v dryers to have full size air/heating grate at the back of the drum, and put the filter back where it belongs, in the front of the machine (in door).

Now to find a decent price.
