I clean my car alot and have lots of small microfibre towels that get really dirty. When I wash them it leaves a grease ring inside the washing machine. Well needless to say Im not "allowed" to clean the towels in the machine anymore. So I've been doing some research on small compact washers like the Haier HLP21E and so on. I found that Target sells this exact model. Went to the store and they don't have them on display (even though it says online that they do). I then tried everywhere to find one that I could see. Im probably going to have to order it online and have it delviered, but I was wondering if anyone has see one, has one, or can tell me where I can see one or pick one up at a store? I dont want to spend over $230 for a compact, and I want it to spin (so the ones at Best Buy made my Koblenz are out of the picture) Any input would be greatly appriciated!!!

the danby compact automatic, top load is my daily driver. excellent wash action and not too expensive. you may have to search online for a local dealer.

I bit the bullet and purchased the Haier HLP21E. It is supposed to be delivered Friday the 21st! I will post pics and a video once it arrives!

ha! I knew I wasn't the only one to get in trouble for too much turtle wax in the kenmore!

I got a lightly used Haier off of craigslist. Since I'm just outside of NYC, there are tons of apartment sized machines on there. I have the smaller one than the one you are considering - the XQBM22. Its okay, but not great. Its a pulsator washer, has a single fill hose, and its very sensitive to what it thinks is an off balance load. It tends to walk when the brake is activated. I've heard that the larger models are better, and the one you mentioned has an agi (i think) but in general, the machine feels like a toy to me and I would love to replace it with a basic apartment sized machine. Something with a real agi and a real spin cycle.I've seen mini kenmores come up once in a while. Are you near a city?

just for a giggle...

Almost done with my workshop. You can see the little Haier here.

Cool news on your new machine. Let me know how well yours works - we should compare wash action when you get it. Yours gets much better reviews on the net.

I purchased the larger one! I hope that it works well )it did get good reviews so I hope that it does!) It doesn't have an agitator it has the disk... The grime in the house machine was getting everyone mad and me in trouble :) Hopefully this is a good buy and if not I bought it off Walmart.com so if it stinks then I can return it easily!!

I'll be interested to see what you think about the Haier washer. Have you tried adding some clear ammonia to the wash-water to cut the grease and residue? It works like a charm with a healthy dose of a good detergent. I use it quite often for my work rags. The addition of a little white vinegar to the first rinse water stops the alkali action and leaves the rags sweet smelling. Be extremely careful about using a dryer for rags that have had greasy soils on them, I read an article in the recent issue of Appliance Magazine that recounted a study about the self-heating properties of even washed towels that had different types of oils on them.

Re: Haier Compact Washer:

Hi! Bobby, BobbyD32L I looked at the Wal-Mart Site listing of the Haier Washers. Did you notice in the Specs of the Washer, that it says that the Casters are not included with the Washer, which means to me, that you have to Order them separately. I've never heard of a Compact Portable Washer not coming with the Casters. I've heard of them not having the Level Legs, in case someone wanted to Install it like a Regular Washer, in a permanent location Hook-Up.

You might look again at the details of the Washer you Ordered and if I'm right, you should contact Wal-Mart and ask them if the Casters are included with the Washer at the time of Purchase. I didn't see any indication of any kind of Part Number either for the Casters, so you might have to Order them directly through Haier, if they don't come with the Washer.

Good Luck with the Washer, let us know what you think of the Washer and it's Cleaning ability.

Peace and Great Laundry Cleaning with a Haier, Steve

oh mistereric.........

I believe you had said above:
*Since I'm just outside of NYC*.

I thought the forgotten borough WAS in NYC!
Did you mean, *Since I am just outside of DOWNTOWN/MIDTOWN NYC?*

-wink--

Cute little machine there folks!

Mine doesn't have casters, and they would have been extra, but I've got no reason to move it. It moves enough on its own. If I put wheels on it, i'd be afraid it would move out and get a place of its own.

Ganski... thats a good idea! I'll have to give ammonia and vinegar a try. I've had to run things through twice on occasion. I don't have a lot of hot water in the workshop, so thats not helping things.

Toggle... When speaking with folks who aren't from here, its just easier that way. Staten Island is indeed part of Greater New York City, but its a lot more suburban than just about every place else in the city. I wouldn't want anyone to think I was foolish enough to actually live in Manhattan. ;-)

I have to say those compact washers do look like a lot of fun, shame they don't sell them here else I'd love to try one out! Does anybody have any videos by any chance? Or at least control panel/interior shots?

Jon

I agree with Gansky. Be careful with greasy rags.

My mother years ago polished a stereo console with oily/waxy liquid polish. The rag remained in the hosue and self-heated to the point of self-combusting. The basement was a sooty smoky mess. Good thing the house did not burn down. This ocurred overnight. The smoke could have easily lulled us into uncosciousness, had there not been a door separating the two levels of the home.

The mess required a professional cleaning service as is typically used when there is an actual fire.

Im very careful on what goes into the washer, since I do use solvents that can combust. I soak them laundry detergent then wash them. I will be sure to take pics and a video of it once it arrives! Im excited and cant wait for it to get here!!

Oily rags combust

It's true that rags with oily residue may self-heat and combust. The issue became much more prevalent when enzyme detergents were discontinued. Repeat washing helps but does not eliminate the hazard.
Even after washing , The hazards still exists but can be reduced if the oily rags are sealed in a metal container between uses.
I also heard that even though oily rags didn't combust in the dryer, their OILY LINT DID combust at a later date.
Beware of cooking oils, linseed oils etc and cotton rags!

Eric, I bought the same model as your Haier for my mom's retirement apt. She did not use it, but I did a few times. I have it back at my place now. I hope you are enjoying yours. It is so far ahead of those Sanyo/GE things from the late 60s-early-70s. Instead of running the impeller for long periods of time before reversing, the Haier makes shorter bursts in alternating directions. It does not twist stuff into a ball. I do not know how they accomplish it, but anything that is on top when it stops to reverse, is immediately pulled under when the impeller starts to spin the other direction. It does not like suds when it goes to spin. You mention a lack of hot water in your shop. Do you by any chance have a large party percolator? You could fill that up and have it heat the water to give you maybe a partially full tub of water. You could slip a piece of tubing over the spout and run it down to the opening of the Haier so you would not even have the danger of a burn from trying to pour the water. For grease, you really need some STPP or a water conditioner that contains it. It is far better than ammonia. Maybe you could try automatic dishwasher detergent since it has phosphates and does not suds.

Have fun with the new toy. Tom

Pete, Eric, and Greg

I have the Haier in my kitchen. I always wanted to wash in the kitchen in the warm and comforting way some of my relatives did, and on Martin Luther King Day my dream came true. Portable though it is, it has become my daily driver. With a capacity slightly more than half that of a unimatic, it cleans like a dream. The Heavy cycle starts with a 19 minute soak, intermittently agitated, followed by a 12 minute wash, then two rinses. It spins at 800rpm which is pretty fast; it launches through the cycles without pausing, like a Unimatic. It has a really low water level setting. The most unusal cycle is the "Wash Only"-- it fills, washes for six minutes, and shuts off--great for overnignt soaking, or if you're going out. It also has a "Light" cycle: one wash, on rinse. It has slots at 8 o'clock and 2 for your hands to lift it--very light. The sounds it makes are alluring, the agitation is fabulous, and when the wash is done, it plays "Jingle Bells" --ah! those velly funny Chinese.

Tide HE works great; anything else oversudses. The spinning is nuts: it spins for a few seconds, then disengages while the pump stays on. This operation repeats, six times I think, then CLICK and WHOOSH and its off to 800rpms. I love it.

I have pix in my computer but they're too large, and I'm only days away from posting. Just learning. See you then.

Mike
