While reading through a copy of House+Home from July 1953 last evening, I found the following blurb in the "New Products" section of the magazine. I thought the description of the finish was interesting, and I believe from time-to-time some of these copper products have turned up here.

"A gracious complement to almost any kitchen is Chamber's new copper-plated gas range. Looking impre3ssively like the cooking vessel it is, the luxury appliance is especially suited for use with the natural wood and colored cabinets currently favored for open-plan kitchens. The range's copper finish is oxidized, burnished, and topped with a protective clear coating that can be washed with warm water and detergent and never needs scouring or polishing. In abrasion tests conducted by the manufacturer, the treated copper finish proved to be ten times as scratch resistant as conventional refrigerator enamel. Panels also were subjected to salt spray, humidity, and intense heat, and showed no adverse effects. Obtainable with either a chromium-plated or black-enameled cooking surface, the range retails for $499.50, installed. Two built-in models -- an oven and a four-burner cooking top with a broiler-griddle -- will soon be available with the "antiqued" copper finish.

Manufacturer: Chamber's, Shelbyville, Ind."

Beautiful

When new, but one tiny nick and the copper tarnishes under the clear coat, every one I ever saw looked awful, ..499.00 Imagine what that works out to in todays dollars!!!!

We have the Chambers separates in Antique Copper...

aka the "In-A-Wall" oven (ours is the electric version) and the "In-A-Top" Cooktop, available in 27", 33" and 42" versions, the latter with built-in griddle/broiler.

We have the 27" gas version with no griddle. Our Copper oven is 1956 NOS never used, we drove to Indiana to get it! Bought them for use at our VT cottage but we decided to go with a Frigidaire 30" range so that the wall space could be used as a pantry, so they sit still unused at this point.

Hans...

if son decides he doesn't want it we'd sell it for what we paid for it. They were asking 1000 but after a month of sitting on CL they had to move it (house was sold) so the daughter inheritors finally saw the light and accepted our offer of 300. The house was a '40s showplace on a lake with an incredible yellow St Charles kitchen. It weighs a ton, near 200#! I have all the original manuals, books, and sales brochure that came with it, they saved everything. It still has the paper wrapper around the broiler pan and the factory paper sticker on the inside of the door. There is minor discoloration/streaking of the Copper finish on the oven door (only) from almost 60 yrs of basement storage, but to us it was patina. Otherwise it's like from the factory and overall quite beautiful, it gets raves from everyone who sees it. If truly interested eMail me and I'll ask him about it when he comes home for Thanksgiving.
