Yay!! The classic copper Jell-O molds I ordered from a woman in Wisconsin via e-bay arrived today. All the classics are present. There are 15 total, these 10 being my favorites. Got the lot for $25, which seemed a very reasonable price. This is quite a blast from the past, as our kitchen wall was adorned with many of these when I was a tyke.

Unfortunately, I'm really busy the next few days, so the Parade Of Horrors (congealed salad division) will have to wait a few days.

Question: How do I care for these? Hand wash in Dawn? Special cleaner? Dishwasher with Finish Powerball Tabs?

I wash mine by hand...

...with regular dish washing liquid. I wash them separately from anything else to guard against scratching and marring the finish.

Eugene,
These are real beauties! Don't put them in the dishwasher - wash them in hot sudsy water and they will be fine. They look pretty clean, but you may need a brush to get in the nooks and crannies.

If you look closely, somewhere near the hanging ring, many of these should be imprinted with the size, i.e., 3 cup, 4 cup, 6 cup, etc.

I CANNOT wait to see the congealed delights ahead! I'll have to dig out some recipes I have and try some, too.

There's always room for Jell-O!!

Wow nice Eugine I use to see them on peoples walls in the
Kitchen and thought it was decoration lol.
Now with Kelly's recepies should be a cool Jell-O party.

Darren-- I think a lot of people did use the copper molds as wall decorations. My mom would use her molds to make molded Jell-O salads for special occasions. Aside: Where are those used Whirlpool DD's in your avatar? They look like they're in great shape.

Joe, Kevin, & Tim-- Thanks for the information on cleaning the molds. I will wash them carefully in the sink. I'm looking forward to trying my hand at molded salads. I'm sure it will take some practice to layer the colors, etc., as most of the recipes have instructions like "chill until partially set". I have a couple of vintage 1950's-60's Jell-O recipe books, with plenty of examples, some delicious-looking, and others that don't even seem edible, LOL.

Enjoy...

...those molds and the "salads" made in them! While some of those molded creations are truly bizarre, a lot of them are quite good - looking nice on the table and are refreshing and tasty. I've found that a nice Jell-o molded "salad" or dessert always brings nostalgic comments from folks.

until 2 years ago I had 157 copper molds all around my kitchen...actully had fun collecting them and they were great for conversation when I had parties. I took them all down when I repainted my kitchen and after a couple weeks decided I was done with jell-o molds and boxed them all up...still couldn't part with them.

The mold in the back between the grapes and bundt looking mold I had hanging above the kitchen doorway...my friends also refered to it as the "Madonna Tittie"

BTW..I made a Black Cherry Cola Jell-O salad last night to take to a chuch potluck this evening...I used one of the molds...I turned it out on a plate of lettuce this monring. It looks "okay" but it didn't come out of the mold the way I had hoped. I sprayed the mold with Pam but it still stuck...ended up leaving the mold inverted on a the plate for about 20 minutes...it stuck a little on the top. Any tricks of the trade to get them out without sticking???

Mark - I have always rinsed the molds with cold water prior to filling them. Once the jello is set, I run a knife around the edge of the mold. Then I use a bowl of tepid water and submerge the mold in it for 15-20 seconds. I pull the mold out of the water, give it a little shake, and if I see/hear movement, I invert the mold onto the serving dish. If it is still not moving, another 5-10 seconds in the water usually does the trick.
