Corning Ware Electromatic Cleaning Advice?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Here's a picture of the whole Electromatic with 2 friends. The Electromatic is the one in the middle. The other 2 are stove top models. I think I saw the pattern on the one on the right on a percolator used in one episode of The Partridge Family.

Ralph--you're welcome!

This whole issue has been interesting. Presumably, the system is designed to keep people from plugging in the element when it's not in the pot. Which seems strange--it's one of those things I can't imagine anyone doing. I suppose it was one of those design decisions made by the legal department...

And yet the later models had no such limitation with their proprietary perc cord receptacles, which seems like a step backward in safety.

As I mentioned above, there are subtle differences in the carafe handle's design over the post-proprietary-perc-cord production run, based, I presume, on changes in the companion heating elements. I have an example I will try to post, and perhaps we can answer another question.

79 Recall

In 1979 I was enjoying my first year "out" while disco was king and Lacoste shirts were mandatory weekend night apparel.

I think the 1979 recall was the one that hit all model years except the first, which only employed the stainless collar, not the combination collar and spout like everything that came after it.

Two Seemingly Identical Carafes

It's not until you insert the heating assembly (mid 60's with indicator bubble) that it becomes evident that the handles are different. The assembly fits sloppily into the carafe handle on the left and causes the element to clank against the carafe interior. It fits perfectly in the carafe on the right. Look closely and you will see that the one on the right has a notch at the top where heating assembly drops in.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say the carafe on the left is a later issue than the one on the right.

Can anyone produce the correct element for the one on the left?

Alan,

That style pot is from the 70's. The earlier models had a signal light that was dome shaped. My Spice O' Life pot is like the one you have posted. One item that is extremely hard to find is the plastic trivet that came with these pots when originally NIB. These seem to eventually get lost or tossed as time goes by.

Thanks Polkanut

I thought it was one of the later models. Also, I'm assuming the standard percolator cord is an earlier model, what time period did that span?

I have a pot with the trivet, hopefully I can find it sometime. I found the whole thing loose at a thrift store, it's a miracle it didn't get tossed. I think it's the eight cup model, with the cornflower design.

Alan, I found a similar one to yours in like new condition, which I believe I made reference to somewhere above. These were the last of the Electromatics, and many of them were manufactured with the bad glue in the year that triggered the recall.

I've read that if there is a dot to the left of the 8 or 10 cup mark inside the carafe that this means it's one of the bad carafes that were part of the first phase of the recall.

I gave the one I found to a friend's mom. I told him that when he was home for Thanksgiving to check the carafe for the dots and if needed, advise his mom to proceed with caution.

I think Electromatics of this late vintage are in such good shape because they were shelved right away after the mass-recall.

Thanks for the new information, I have the dot to the left of the bigger dot under the 10. If I attempt to make coffee with it I will keep it in or next to the sink. I have a few of the non electric, and a couple of the electric, one is the older model for sure. I never had the nerve to use either type. I have used the regular Pyrex glass percolators with the screwed on band-handle assembly, but I need the correct glass stem and glass part of the basket, and the star for the electric burner. That is not a priority at the moment, since I have my regular metal percolators. I didn't notice a similar top style to my new one in the pics in this thread, but re-read most of the rest of the comments. I also checked a few of the sites out.

Yeah, the late model one I found had already been shipped to Arizona before I started this thread, or I would have posted a picture of it.

I like the earlier models that have the larger glass insert in the lid, which is why I let the late model one go. Had I known about the extra dot, I would have checked it for that before sending it home with my friend.

Also, the later types have a spring-loaded basket assembly and a stationary retainer clip at the top of the heating element. This is different from earlier ones where the basket had no spring and instead the clip flipped up and down.

And BTW, does anyone have any comments on the two carafes I posted above with the slight differences in their handles, or is it all just too esoteric?

Ralph,

My Spice O' Life Electromatic has a dot next to the 8. I still love the pot, but now I know to proceed with caution when I use it. I saw it after reading your earlier post, otherwise I would have never noticed it.

I always manage to learn something new here @ AW.org!
