This is my parents' machine bought in 1996. It still works perfectly although has had lots of maintenance including: many brush replacements, motor bearing replacements, door lock repair, belt and suspension replacements, drum bearing replacement, water inlet solenoid valve replacement, drum rubber replacement.
It was used extensively over the years by my mum, almost every day and sometimes with very heavy loads, most commonly on the cottons 60 degree cycle (to make maximum use of hot water stored in a cylinder in the house - we'd always run the hot tap first to flush out the cold in the pluming) but with the temperature reduced to 40 or 30.
The commutator has been repaired and replaced with spares repeatedly over the years but we have run out of spares and the machine doesn't spin as well. The outer casing has become rusty. My parents decided to get a new machine about 6 months ago but this old one, plummed in for a while but no longer used is going to the tip soon.
I enjoyed watching it when I was younger and will be sad to see it go! It has a loud ticking noise when the program advances. During the cotton final spin, it slowly builds up, starting at around 500 RPM, then an intermediate speed for about 15 seconds then up to 1000 RPM. The synthetic and woolen final spin carries out the same sequence but continues spinning for only a short time at 1000 RPM.
