Yes, it's custom painted. They're still drunk.
So, by doing a lousy job of painting on a $25 stereo cabinet, somehow increases it's value $450?

A high end Mid Century shop in Knoxville, TN is selling a gutted Magnavox Imperial with different insides, painted white over walnut, and orange and green speaker panels. I suggested it would have brought as much or more in its untouched state. I got a nice answer, that it wasn't in too good shape before they transformed it. Someone, maybe on this site, took the same model as the Union Jacked one, removed all the molded trim, and came up with a Western Auto Truetone inspired cabinet.
If Magnavox, or any other console maker of that era, had offered hand carved cabinets instead of the dreaded "non wood material", only the wealthy could have bought them. And there are die hard Magnavox nuts who despise the faux bois treatment too, not just people of discriminating tastes. Even worse, your walnut, pecan, fruitwood, maple, or mahogany cabinets were just finishes, not solids or veneers. Odd though, that Magnavox outsold all the others for years. Here's my French armoire, yes, the sides and face of the bottom unit are p*****c, but the entire top is wood.

came in around the time the popularity of Mediterranian and Spanish Colonial decor was on the rise, making it much easier to duplicate those elaborate curves and curlicues. We bought a Mediterranian bedroom suite, 2 dressers, headboard, etc. riddled with that horrible ersatz plastic dreck around 1971, but quickly began wondering what were we thinking? It was gone by '73, replaced by solid Colonial pine.
Some of the more elaborately decorated late '60s to mid '70s consoles are enough to provoke a serious gag reflex.

Compared to most manufacturers, Magnavox did a decent job on "some" consoles using non-wood material.

That "Free" Magnavox Hi-Fi console doesn't look so bad.So the "Plasteek" can look OK if its properly done as on that unit.
The painted Hi-Fi-now that one should have the components gutted from it and put into another cabinet.Normally I don't like "gutting" Hi-Fi consoles-but that one is an exception.

Looks like it was custom painted for 1313 Mockingbird Lane...probably glows in the dark.
What I Always and Really needed-A Hi-Fi console that glows in the dark---just think during those dark nightime listening sessions---you can find your stereo!Next thing you know they will put the changing colors glowing LED light strips on them!
