Just aquired a 1956 GE Mobile Maid portable DW from gregm. Would anybody have an owners manual for this model that can be scanned or photocopied? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks everyone.

1956, let's see; yours is the one with the big dial on the front and the little red detergent dispenser inside, right? Once the lid is closed, the only way to unlock it is to turn the dial around to dry where it pops open. If you need to open the lid right after the machine is started, unplug it and note position of the dial. Turn it until the lid pops up and add the dish. Finish turning the dial to OFF and raise the detergent cup which will have dumped when you turned the dial. Add new detergent and close the cap of the dispenser. Now, close the lid, advance the dial back to where it was to prevent the machine from filling again and then plug the cord back into the socket.

Remember that this machine is not as advanced as some that came later so do not expect it to fully remove stuff that is stuck to dishes, especially starchy foods like rice. The Bakelite impellers did not perform as well as the metal ones and the detergent wash portion of the cycle is not very long so you will have to see if the enzyme detergents work for you or if you need to use the gel formulas that have chlorine in them. Another thing that you can do to improve the washing performance is to add some detergent to the Pre Rinse. I don't know if there is a purge period before the fill. If there is a purge, you will need to put the detergent where it won't be flushed down the drain before the first fill.

Have fun with your newest toy.
Tom
