What causes this device to let cold air come in to stop working in fridges although the freezer work fine?

You can hear if

the damper moves or not usually. It's a small stepper motor similar to those used in automotive clinmate control selector ducts. They commonly fail on later Fridgidaire brand SXS models. If the evaporator is iced up, and ice forms in the fridge side, the damper may bind.
If the temp. sensors are faulty, or the control board, those could be the cause as well. However, liner sensors are not king, the liner protection mode is, so it doesn't crack from expansion/contraction. Thusly, the control board can trigger a defrost cycle even though the sensors say the fridge is too warm if the feezer needs it. So, in addition to, the defrost heater may be bad causing icing.
You need a multimeter to test everything.

Successfully swapped a damper in Maytag SXS

It was not too expensive and sadly turned out after being replaced it was not the problem but the PCB but having found that out it was cheaper than a new fridge.

The fridge is now on its 3rd PCB so I am assuming its cheap chinesium stuff??? I did however get a spare board out of the repair company as the engineer programmed it wrong and although the freezer got down to temp the fridge remained too high so Whirlpool came out replaced the board again and said there is nothing wrong with the one removed keep it and save a few £ !!
