My DASH from 195X smells just like IVORY SNOW right now but I smelled Roberts later "DASH IN STOCK" and it smelled like Lily of The Valley.

What is YOUR IMPRESSION/MEMORY??

You spoke to Dash France? Perhaps that is the reason the stuff is on sale. I never bought the stuff and I'm not going to buy it now. I never bought detergent with a built in softener and I'm not going to buy it now.

Salt, hmmmmm. Interesting thought, I hope they give the secret ingredient of the fragrance, but I suspect that isn't necessary in the patent.

See I know if I gave Jon one whiff of Dash he'd be off and running. You should have seen what happened the first time he came to Minnie and tried my Sunbeam Coffeemaster.

I think I said in my previous post that Dash overhere is on sale because Jon talked to Dash in France... LOL That is not what I meant! I meant to say that Dash here might be on sale while they discontinue it.

I have no clue about the ingredient but my wild guess is tallow.

Dash's scent....

Ma only used if for a brief time...between the last of the Instant Fels, and just before Bold. I would have been 5-7 years old then. I remember it being "clean," and a little "sharp," but not overwhelmingly perfume-y. I liked it, and I probably would like it again.

Please add me to the "buy" list, but preferably for less than 10 pounds, please.

My English is perhaps not good enough for this. Is tallow the same as talcum? If it is not the same, then that is my second guess.

Tallow is remdered animal fat(usually beef) used for candle and soap making amoung other things. Talc is short for talcum which is the mineral commonly used in some bath and baby powders as it provides a smooth surface to keep sking from chafing. Inhaling too much of the stuff can lead to breathing problems so many doctors now advise mothers to use either corn starch or other based powders, or at least try not to "powder down" baby to such an extent the talcum powder goes flying all over the place. Pity since NOTHING smells as wonderful as a freshly bathed and baby powdered infant.

There is me, going all broody again. *LOL*

Oh as for suds suppression.

My guess would be beef tallow also, as soap and fats work well in supressing suds. Fels soap if made from beef fat and grated Fels does a great job of knocking down suds.

The suds supressant in DASH:

Most surfactants (read HEAVY DUTY synthetic detergents) can be postively or negatively charged. This class is terrific at cleaning natural fibers ( cotton, hemp, linen, ). They are bad at cleaning animal fibers ( wool, silk). It has long been known neutral surfactants (NonIonic) are what cleans animal fibers best.
It was found at P&G that the heavy duty surfactant in DASH was a great detergent but it sudseds up way too much in a F/L. The discovery was made in 1956 that two compounds put together would knock the suds down yet allow the detergent to work just like it would in a top loader where as Robert knows suds aren't a problem!!

The two ingredients that do this are: HYFAC 431 and UCON 56. And now everyone is saying HUUUH????
HYFAC 431 is nothing more than HYDROGENATED FISH FAT! And UCON 56 is none other than our NONIONIC detergent used on animal fibers. Somehow together they work splendidly and allow the original detergent in DASH ( and TIDE) to still do its work.

They found both work seperately well but TOGETHER they supress suds WAY Off the Charts!!

It seems that these are still available so I am searching for a supply to play with at JTL - JETCONE TESTING LABS.

Will keep you all posted and remember all you devout Catholics to Scrape your plates on Fridays and save the scraps!! We'll need all that fish oil!!

Vintage fish smelling Dash??? This is one cracked Jetcone if he thinks this is going to fly!!! Not in my laundry room!!! Ol' Jon needs to do more vintage research to find the vintage patented formula for vintage scent of original vintage Dash.

Until then, it's grated Fels Naptha for me!

Trans Fish Fat??

Ok, that has just put me off "Dash", *LOL*.

According to a post I made from an "Green" website 1970's Dash contained about 49% (not sure if this was by volume or weight) phosphates. One can still purchase STPP, but if you choose to go the "Green" route it is going to get interesting to reformulate using the several chemicals required to to the same work as phosphates.

I remember Dash as having a light, sweet, fragrance. I do not think the fragrance had citrus tones to it. Seems like more fruity tones like cherry and apple.

Peter: I think when the fish fat gets Hydrogenated the scent goes. But JTL we are working on the perfume formulation now.

I am going for the phosphate version for the internal club use. As to marketing we are aways from there. But there are new compounds being investigated today which are supposed to act like phosphates did.

You are close Launderess the phosphate compound was high on the list after the surfactant. All the formulations are by weight not volume.

To date nonone chemical can replace phosphates, you probably will need a "chemical cocktail" of sorts to achive the water softening, pH buffering, soil suspension and other properties which make phosphates so great in cleaning products.

Other words in your shell like ear:

Borates are being phased out of European detergents as the EU is set ban/set limits on their usage. Apparently borates (including sodium perborate) have some effects on water in lakes, streams etc (sound familiar?).

Great thing about using phosphates is so much is done by the one chemical, only a few others like washer protection agents, fabric whiteners, etc are required. Again a look at vintage detergents shows many were about 50% phosphates.
