In case there are any of you who don't know about this site, blackfridayads.com posts advance notice of the sales that begin on the day after Thanksgiving... Black Friday. I'll put the link below.

Why Black Friday? A popular misconception is that it's the day retailers expect their sales to go, "into the black," or profitable, as opposed to being "in the red," or down.

The true origins are more negative than positive. Retail managers and full-timers know it's the day their lives end until after the holidays are over (I always knew it as a black day!). The store owns you. Transportation workers (i.e.- bus and taxi drivers) know it's when all hell breaks loose on the roads as the (unofficial) first shopping day of the holiday season. Some history shows that even police see it as a nightmare day with the extra shoppers causing traffic headaches!

So, scope out your goodies and get in line nice and early!!!

Hey Allen,

You're absolutely correct. That's because the Saturday before Christmas is typically the biggest shopping day of the year, dollar-wise. BF is usually touted as such, but it's not usually the biggest. In fact, I'd bet that the newscasts will start talking about BF any day now, and mentioning getting ready for the biggest shopping day of the year.

'course, they're also the ones hyping the big storms days before they show up (not nearly as strong as they were predicted) and frightening people into emptying store shelves of milk and bread!

If I find something worth getting my a** out of bed at 3am for, I go. But, it takes more and more to make it worth it to me! I haven't seen any laptops in the ads that have rocked my world yet, not that I need one, nor anything else. We'll see!

None for me, thanks.

I haven't done the Black Friday get up early to stand in endless lines for over ten years and then only a couple of times. Many of the stores are doing "Door Crasher" sales for early morning hours already, for a number of reasons I would imagine. I heard WalMart was going to have extra staff and security on duty to help control the herds. Perhaps no one will have to die this year and with credit card interest and availability what it is, shoppers will likely be careful all around than in years past. There is no apparent shortage of cheap crap to buy though, the stores are just jammed with stuff.

im a store director of one of these large retailers. there is so much that is for sale and these doorbusters are limited.. it amazes me on black friday all the people that line up at the doors with mouths foaming to run in to the stores to find their best deal? throughout the season, all prices are real good.. promos are run throughout the season just as low- except for those few blockbusters they advertise- it just amazes me...for me? id rather stay in bed on friday instead of having to shlep to my building at 2am, and get ready for the rush..

I agree! As I said before, I haven't seen anything (so far) that is worth my getting out of bed before the ass-crack of dawn. The "door busters," a.k.a. "loss leaders," are always limited quantity, and at some of the places, Best Buy, most notably, if you're not in line early to get a ticket for that item, you're not going to get it!

I'm lucky enough to have gotten out of retail in 1997. That's just about the time that middle-to-upper management was making store management uphold policies, but caving to customers who would call them. That really put the screws to consumer confidence in the on-site management! I'm guessing it hasn't gotten any better, eh, Bleacho?

Is it over, yet?

As kids, we got one gift from the parents and another from Santa Claus. I honestly don't remember getting anything big-ticket from aunts, uncles and grandparents. When I became a teenager and would try to give THEM gifts, they all said "save your money".

My family, and indeed those of my ethnic group, appear to refuse to buy into the commercialism (pardon the pun)and the hype.

It's the spirit of the holiday that counts.

I was not one for Chrismas cards either, but am feeling the need to do them this year as I "mature". (That's a euphimism for age disgracefully and rot-to-hell! LOL). What pisses me off probably more than anything is that the politcally-correct "holiday" cards have now overrun the selection of all "Christmas" cards and it gets harder to find "Christmas" cards with a Christmas theme.

Two other things come to mind to turn my stomach. My first partner made such a damn fuss, carried on and was all about putting on a show for that holiday. A friend was also tellimg me he'd steal Christmas lights from the neighbors' yeards and put them on his mother's property when he was a (poor) kid.

DISGUISTING.


It's my holiday and I cant stand it. I feel for those who don't partake of it.

I am actually a Dec 24th at 6:00 P.M. shopper, but this year I have sworn to do better. I already have a few things for my daughter. I have had to work many Black Friday sales, but have never had the gumption or desire to shop them.

Advice to shoppers:
1. It is not the clerks fault that the store had limited quantities of a sale item.
2. No I didn't have to go check if there were more, as I have already verified the lack of an item with the other 750 customers requesting it.
3. It is supposed to be the season of good will and cheer, could you at least smile when you are grabbing the the receipt from me?
4. Though the floor is more convenient, would it kill you to put something back on the shelf if you don't want it?
5. I'm sorry you don't celebrate Christmas. No I didn't mean to assume. Please forgive me and have a good day.
6. No I didn't smell the alcohol on Santa's breath.
7. The elves work for the photo people, I am sorry they wouldn't let you cut in line.
8. No I am sorry but I can't hold your items at the desk until you are finished shopping.

Other than these vents, please be safe. And have a happy season.
 
Black Friday is a rip. Those "Doorbuster" sales are VERY limited quantity. Example: A 40" television for $599. Too bad there's only 4 in stock. So the first 4 people at 6am get the TV. The rest pay full price. BS.

I'd rather look at the deals on Cyber Monday. Shop in your PJ's sipping coffee and still get a deal.

I Would Not...

...Go to a mall on Black Friday in exchange for a winning Powerball ticket. Absolute insanity, bringing out the very worst in people. I've seen one driver ram another over a parking space.
 
In Canada and the UK and I'm guessing Oz the day after Xmas (Boxing Day) is the big sale day with all these same crazy sales wtih limited doorcrashers etc. Cept now a lot of them extend the concept to Boxing Week (no such thing technically) and early Boxing Day sales such as Sears is doing in November. Anything to get people to buy something. I gave up on them decades ago.
 
I received notice earlier that a number of the BF sales for tomorrow at Besy Buy are available online now! I just made a purchase, and won't even have to think about getting up early tomorrow!

It used to be that stores would make the BF.com site take down the ads ASAP. Now, at least w/Best Buy, they are using the technology to get sales today that they may not have gotten at all! If I had gone out tomorrow morning for a hard drive, I'd have ended up at Office Depot where it was $20 cheaper. But, since I had a BB $15 cert, the $5 difference isn't worth me getting up that early!
