Not the dreck one sees today, but the really good vintage stuff.

One of the great joys of being home sick from school, and or on holiday was to watch soap operas with Mother, and later one's friends. Most every woman had her favourite "story" as they were LOYAL. Episodes would be endlessly rehased and discussed at card games, at the supermarket, the beauty parlor, college dorms and cafeterias, anyplace women (and some men)gathered.

My all time favourite was General Hospital, which probably helped steer me towards wishing to study nursing. Lovely Port Charles had everything anyone could want in a small town, including scandal! Mona Kane, Nurse Jessie, Bobbie Spencer, whoo hoo!

Runners up:

One Life To Live
Dark Shadows

Is General Hospital the soap with Julie London in?

My fave was Richmond Hill from Australia, a few cast members from Prinoner Cell Block H in there !!!

Paul-

That would be quite the miracle, considering the fact that Julie London has been dead since 2000.

She did play a nurse on "Emergency," but that was considered a night-time drama here in the States.

Julie London

Was not only a famous singer, but yes played the "head nurse" on Emergency, another in the long line of hospital/medical TV dramas.

Seemed back in those days most every other night time drama had medical/nursing persons as either their prime focus, or at least one of the characters.

Funny how these things cycle through. As Launderess mentioned, there was a time when medical dramas were 'the thing.' A few years back it is was shows dealing with law/the legal profession. Now, every other program is a crime scene investigation/corpse-of-the-day drama.

And the supernatural seems to be getting more airplay, too.
There's the show with what's-her-name from Party Of Five; the show with one of the 27 Arquettes; and I believe there's a new one actually called Supernatural.

Jeff, if you're a fan of the young Chad Everett, you might want to check out a '60s film (comedy) called 'The Impossible Years'. Not a great work of art, but Everett has a secondary lead. It's one of those guilty pleasure films for me. I saw it when I was a kid, and never miss it when it plays on TCM. David Niven stars.

And thank god he doesn't suffer from lift/tuck/plastic surgery fakery. I've seen very few celebs who actually look better from it. Most look pulled and stretched and...well, fake! I didn't realize Everett was still alive.

On Everett: Just read at Wikipedia that he's a Republican, and had a run-in with Lily Tomlin on the Dick Cavett show back in the early '70s. Tomlin became enraged when Everett referred to his wife as "his property" and she stormed off the set.

Back to daytime soap operas...

One summer vacation in the 1960s I got hooked on "Love of Life". Can't remember the players/characters, but I did follow it for the entire summer. My OL was a fan of "Edge of Night" and "Guiding Light" (Ick).

Could it be all those appliance/detergents commercials started "steering" me at an early age?
