What would cause a DD Kenmore to spin very slowly? A worn clutch? Bad transmission? Is it hard to replace either of these? I'd imagine the transmission is a nightmare to replace and totally not worth it, but what about a clutch? Are they expensive?

It depends...my experience has been if washing a really heavy load it will spin slowly...or sudslock will cause it. the transmission is really easy to replace if you have to do it. I should add the linkie to the job aids from Whirlpool. They can explain it better than I can..
Clutch kit is part # 285785. You need to remove the cabinet, agitator, pump and motor, then disconnect the wire harness from the motor and start capacitor. 3 1/2 inch bolts hold the tranny...drop the tranny and you will see the clutch sits atop the tranny.
