I was running my dryer last week and noticed it was running hot and was starting to give off that "too hot" smell so I stopped the unit and moved the load to another dryer.

I've started to disassemble the cabinet but before I get too far, I wanted to ask about what should be checked / replaced as a matter of routine for a unit this old.
It's a Sears 1976 Electronic dryer 110.76490600.

If anybody has an operator's manual or a drying shelf they're willing to part with, please let me know in a P.M. and let's work out a deal.

Thanks

Scoots, your dryer is a 1974 model....

If your dryer were a 1976 model it would have the black style control panel Kenmore used with slight variation through the end of belt drive production in 1986. Kenmore changed the way the model number date codes worked in 1973 or 1974 (can't remember which year). The proper way to read the model number on your model is to take the first and third digit after the 110. and put them together to get the model year. PAT COFFEY

While you have it apart, it would be a good idea to go ahead and check your thermostats. Sometimes they can get lint built up on them and not give a correct reading, which results in the dryer getting too hot.

Thanks everybody for your first thoughts on this, esp dust on the heating elements and thermostat checks.

I am fuming mad about messing up the year code. I was under the impression that the year was the first two digits after the period. Did they change this at some point to the first and third digits??

Dave: the orange/yellow light is marked "finishing". Back in the dark days of ironing it showed that the clothes were almost done, but still damp enough for ironing.

It was around 1973 or 74 when the arrangement of the digits changed. It then became the first and third digits that coded the model year, which on your model are 7 and 4 respectively. Thus, it a 1974 model.
