Dead Miele C1 Compact Canister - Keep or Kerb?

Was given a dead Miele C1 (wanted the wand and accessories) that was going to be rubbished.

Really don't need *another* vacuum but am intrigued by this little Miele. Apparently however build quality isn't what it ought as a quick internet search turns up many complaints of these things dying after barely three years of use.

Could take it round to local Miele vac repair place for a look see, but am wondering if it is worth bothering.

If the Miele repair place doesn’t charge you an arm and a leg for diagnosis, I say go for it. Easier to make the keep/kerb decision if you know the cost of the repair.

True, and thank you.

Will call round over next few days and see if a local place will just diagnose for free, then give options later. Far too many places slap on a charge just to look at things, but counter that one receives credit towards work if decide to go forward. Rather like Miele with their call out charges....

The C-1's

are the low end vac's., made in China. I thought they used the same vortex motor as all of them though. However, if they utilize Leffo pressure transducers, they are problematic along with the chintsey electronics connecting them. Same issues as with Hungarian made late model Electroluxes.
If the motor is still ok, remove and or bypass all the automatic suction servo's, and make it a single speed machine.

If the vac is dead...more than likely it might be a defective cord reel . My S5 Ariel developed that issue and I took the vac apart and replaced the cord reel assembly...there are vids on YouTube that show you how if you are handy. The new cord reel was a cool $100....I paid $500 for the vac in 2008. I use it everyday....

Trash day isn't until Friday so have a few days to think things over. Will call around to see what there is about possible cost of repair/diagnosis.

Past several days saw two vacs out on curb, but left them be as wasn't interested.

But was several blocks from home (walking home), and it had poured rain all day. So wasn't sure how long the thing had sat sitting and if was exposed to prolonged periods of wet. Oh and before putting out for rubbish previous owner cut power cord right at the handle.

A few days ago spied a "Sanitaire" vacuum out on curb, but again had no interest. The cord was still attached but was patched in several areas with tape.

Thing probably did work, but those vacs are mainly for rugs/carpeting, and our home is mostly hard wood and other flooring. Thus even if the thing did work would be of little use. Still have that Hoover found a few years ago now that gets very little use for same reason.

at a local vacuum store chain, and major Miele dealer told me it was also the cord reel on a Hungarian E-Lux Oxygen 3 that was our kids. They paid $500 for it at Lowes. It was only 3 years old. He quoted me $200 to repair it. So I took the machine apart, put another cord with no reel on it, and it did not run either. So I jury rigged it by removing all the transducers, and boards, and installed a rocker switch on the hose handle for the motor on-off. Now it runs. It works the same as an old Eureka powerteam. The brush roll motor runs when you turn it on.
So either the store is crooked, or the tech. is paid on a commission, or both.

The C1's are German made. The only Miele's that aren't German-made are the C2 Powerline (the old S5 style) and C1 Compact (the old S4 style). C1 Classic, C2 Compact and all the C3's are German made.

We have a Miele C1, and the label on the back states that it is assembled in China from parts manufactured in both Germany and China. I've easily owned over 50 vacuums since 1970, probably more, I lost count long ago. This little vac with a Turbo Head is one of the very best I’ve ever owned. The suction is impressive, it’s quiet, light weight, maneuvers easily and cleans excellently. My husband David does the housecleaning and he prefers a canister since we have stairs and he also likes to dust with the vac. He loves the little Miele. And the Turbo Nozzle cleans our WW carpet just as good or better than any upright or electrically powered power nozzle we’ve used in the past.
