194 what!!!!

I believe it is 1941....my great uncle was killed Oct 31 1941 on the Navy ship the Reuben James, torpedoed by the Germans The American Legion post in Lenoir N.C. is named in his honor..The Lee Powell Post. This all happened before Pearl Harbor, but is largely forgotten now.

Pearl Harbor

There really arent many servicemen left that were at Pearl Harbor that early Sunday morning. The youngest would be 84.Watch the movie Pear Harbor with Josh Hartnett probably one of the best made and factual.Say a prayer for them,Bobby

Ralph

Right there with ya!

My OM and OL are both 84. He doesn't remember what he was doing that day, she remembers listening to Sammy Kaye's radio program which was interrupted with the news. They weren't even dating at the time, though. My OL lived with my aunt and uncle, I asked her once if she saw anything about it on TV (they had one of the few TV's around in 1941, a Motorola); she said "Don't be stupid, how could they broadcast something from Hawaii?"

Times have changed...

!941 Television

I twas most likely early afternoon,,after church,my grandmother told me when I was younger. There werent many newscast on TV then.Even as a child in the 50s,Sunday afternoons were boring on the tube for a child.Operas and modern dance.Real programming didnt start till 6ish,with Victory at Sea and 20th century with Walter Cronkrite and then Lassie.People in New Jersey most likely received their signal from NYC atop the Empire state building and the RCA building.I dont know if CBS was actually broadcasting TV or not. Most sets were built with RCA patents and equipped with 3or5 channel tuners,Thanks Bobby

I was a bit surprised this year when none of the networks or local stations aired any of the usual Pearl Harbor related movies, like "Tora Tora Tora".

I visited Pearl and the Arizona memorial back in the early 90's while on a business trip to Honolulu. The memorial is very understated, and I found it difficult to believe that an entire battleship and crew was resting under the memorial. I also toured a WWII era sub while there, which was very interesting.

Suds you are right about that, Pearl Harbor with Josh H. was on Strz. tonight. We do not have strz but have the DVD. It is kinda LAZY, that there is little if any effort for HBO, and the like to, have programming related to the calendar date, as an observance. The military channel had a couple of shows re: Pearl Harbor. I would like to see "Pearl" again i remember Ms. Angie Dickinson was in that mini series, iirc it was kinda "steamy" for its day. alr2903

Ones (1) and sevens(7) they look alike

"i remember Ms. Angie Dickinson was in that mini series"
I don't remember that, I will have to look it up. Angie was one hot mommy in her day.

"Tora Tora Tora" and "Midway" have to be two of my favorite war movies. "Tora Tora Tora" was somewhat notable for breaking with the Hollywood tradition of stereotyping and vilifying our (former) enemy, and even presenting the events leading up to the attack from the Japanese point of view, and why it preceded the planned warning (although it was careful not to try to justify the attack, even though most Japanese at the time thought it was a justified attack on Euro-American colonialism).

"Midway" is more of a rousing cheer for American military intelligence, the bravery of our sailors and airmen, and sheer good luck for a change. It does tend to exploit a bit of exposure of apparent Japanese hubris which led to them having their asses handed to them on three of four carriers. Just like many Americans couldn't conceive of the Japanese launching a massively deadly attack on Pearl earlier, the Japanese apparently couldn't conceive that the Americans could figure out their game plan and surprise them at sea for a change.

This was all before the much darker side of the Japanese military ethic was revealed in the Bataan Death March, and the horror of American fire bombing and atomic warfare was revealed over Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Then again, the victor gets to write the history.
