Deep fat fryer collection?

My point in posting the Walmart cheapie was that someone buying a garage sale turntable or something from a thrift store is not going to want to spend $$$ on a preamp just too sample the TT's performance.

 

Time moves on and so have I.  I have a stack of 4 or 5 TTs in a closet somewhere, all very high end stuff at the time, but I can't recall the last time I've wanted to play a disk.  Got hundreds in a closet too.  The ease of streaming audio has me firmly in it's grips.  The sound quality is decent, not high quality by any means, but the trade off is worth it for me.  I can get virtually anything I want on Pandora, or any of the hundreds of streaming stations.  I do play it back on very good quality audio systems, though most music today is consumed on iphone, and the like with poor audio quality.

New deep fat fryer!

Thought I would share the new one I picked up at a estate sale the other day. We are putting it to use tonight.

Just also put up those chicken and rabbit decorative molds, since we have chickens and rabbits I couldn't resist. They are getting a vintage initiation with all this mess flying about but I have already cleaned it up.

This is the new one we keep in the kitchen and have already used it a couple of times.

Re fryers

If you use the Westinghouse, you will never use the others!!! I have 2 of them and they hold a good consistent temperature and since they are bowl shaped take less oil.

We used a Westinghouse fryer exactly like that one to make chicken fried steak for our family christmas get together last weekend, 23 people. Cruised right along and OMG, everyone was freaking out about good it was. They couldn't figure why the crust came out so light and fluffy.

By the way, that Westy fryer is the best slow cooker in the world.

I’m really interested to hear that the Westy beats the Sunbeam.  Sunbeam deepfryers are the only vintage appliance I have used all my life, without even thinking of them as vintage.  I’ve always been very happy with them. 

 

My favorite thing to deep-fry is catfish.  It comes out AMAZING every time, and it’s really fast.  I also make churros and awwamat from time to time. I agree that ideally, deep-frying should occur out of doors, but the Sunbeam fries so quickly, it seems to make less of a smell than similar activities on the cooktop.

 

I’ve used other deep-fryers and always been disappointed, but I’ve never tried a Westy.  So, Hans...  on a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rank the Sunbeam and the Westy?

^ not even close, streaming absolutely sucks donkey gonads compared to a decent turntable. I'm discovering also that MP3/Streaming is extremly hard on tweeters, there's too much distortion in the high end. What's even worse is that a good, commercially produced CASSETTE can outdo streaming.

I've used both. Honestly, I prefer the Sunbeam. I find that the Westy can run slightly hotter than the Sunbeam. Also, the Westy's more open base makes it more difficult to clean. It's too easy to get water in the base by accident and they DON'T like that at all. It can cause alot of problems.

My Westy was an Ebay deal, and I think it was ever used. When I first turned it on, it had the new appliance smell.

Nice collection there. I only have one semi-vintage fryer, a Hamilton Beach Scovill from the 1970s I'd guess. It's a little square thing and states it can be used as a cooker or fryer. Unfortunately the lid was missing when I found it at the thrift store, but it appears to be brand new. I've never used it.

Otherwise I just have a Presto Fry Daddy that gets used once a year or so. We mostly just bake everything we would fry now, I don't like the lingering smell from the fryer and having to dispose of the old oil.

I've always had an interest in commercial fryers, and when GE housewares came out with their stainless fryers that were similar design to a commercial one, I wanted to get one. But, I'm glad I didn't because they seem to need a lot of oil.

The Westinghouse better....But then I never got one of the Sunbeams to work correctly, I have 4 or 5 of them and none will hold the correct temperature, the only Sunbeam appliance I ever had bad luck with...

My aunt had the WH for as long as I can remember. When she died I looked everywhere for it but no luck. Merry Christmas Basalyga Family!
