Dehumidifer New vs Vintage?

Hi All –

I on the look for new dehumidifier as I need to replace the one I have as it has been recalled for a fire issue. Gotta love the stuff from China (Glee Co) they make some wonderful stuff that doesn’t last. I have been reading up on the new ones and there seem to be issues with them not lasting more than a few years and then just dying. It seems that nobody makes any units here in the US, as they lasted forever. I have searched around and found a Sears 40 pt unit model 5340 (I am sure this unit is from the 90’s as it has the wood front grill) for sale that the seller states that was used very little. I think this unit will be a better buy than anything new on the market today. Thoughts on getting vintage or new.

I'd get a vintage one... beware of the possible noise from that Sears though.. Mom bought one back in the 90's and while it worked well it was quite noisy.. I wouldn't have put up with it compared to my ultra quiet Oasis that's going on 50 years old. Of course if it's in a basement you don't really use the noise is not such a bother.

Someone in another thread had high praise for Oasis dehumidifiers, which appear to be very well built. They posted photos of the inner workings in the Dehumidifer Hell: Recall thread in this forum.

I have a 2013 Frigidaire that is not made by Gree (Chinese company that made all the recalled brands). It is very inexpensive to run, although in Minnesota it really only needs to run for about 3-4 months of the year. No problems with it so far, running 24/7 during summer months. Mine is the 70-pint model shown below. The list price is $319.00, but I ordered mine from a vendor at amazon.com and got it for about $240.00

I've also provided a link to Oasis dehumidifiers. Parts are commercial grade and made of metal.

I bought a Bionaire last fall and it works great. I bought it mainly because the previous dehumidifier I had was extremely loud, even though it was in the basement. With the Bionaire, I can barely hear it running. One difference between the 2 units is that the fan on the Bionaire runs constantly - just the compressor cycles on and off.

I'll never buy another new dehumidifier again.   I bought one for nearly $300 three years ago and it lasted all of two summers.  Last year I bought a late-70s Kenmore for $25 and an unusual early 60s GE for $10 both made it through last summer and are doing fine so far this year.

New Dehumidifier

My 14 year old GE failed last week and I replaced it with a Danby. I bought it because it had a 2 yr. warranty. None of them appear to be made like they used to be. So far I'm pleased. It really gets the job done.

I'm going to "borrow" my parents ancient Sears Coldspot dehumidifier and see how it compares to our 15 year old Gibson.  The Gibson likes to freeze up even when not set very low.
