I have a Friedrich D25 dehumidifier that I run all day (but not 24 hrs at a time). Smallest model they make, using the lowest amount of electricity. Does a good job for me, but of course, every house is different. I went with this model because of the lower power consumption.

In the attached spec sheet, notice that for the D25, the numbers are wrong. It is listed as 4.5 amps, 240 watts. The math (watts = volts x amps) is not right. I emailed the company a couple of years ago, but they haven't gotten around the making the correction.

If humidity drops off in the basement when it drops off outside, I'd suspect there's significant air infiltration.

Humidity travelling on its own... That'd be 'diffusion', right? Movement from an area of higher concentration to one of lower concentration? Maybe one of our guru's can tell us if I remember that correctly:-)

I have a late 70s/early 80s JCPenney dehumidifier, which I rarely ever use.
My basement is mostly underground, with 2 walls having glass block Windows that are 24" high. The basement is unfinished and bring an older home the foundation is terra cotta block. About 12 years ago grandma has external French drains installed and the exterior of the foundation waterproofed and sealed, while expensive it has worked great. When I bought the home the appraiser commented on how dry my basement was and that it didn't smell damp or musty.

The only time there is dampness in my basement is when we get a heavy rain because some water will run down the outside steps and under my basement door

I believe that the humidity that adjusts in my basement in regards to outside humidity is because of the outside/inside air exchanger that is installed on that system. It pretty much runs all the time so I imagine that is where my difference comes from. Went down stairs yesterday to check and the dehumidifier was sitting idle set at 50% and it was 40% on the display. It was a very dry day here yesterday.
