Deodorizing a Miele vacume...

got a miele s5211 "Ariel"canister vac today,and though it works great,it reeks when used-full bag i removed was stuffed full of dog food nuggets along with usual grunge.Even with a new bag,the air blowing out still smells pretty bad...might have to take vacume apart and clean all the parts to get rid of the stench?...BTW,bought it for $3.99 a thermonuclear flaming steal!!-don't mind cleaning it up for that price!

Did you change both filters?  There's a small pre motor and a larger exhaust . The exhaust can be either a simple mesh filter much like the pre motor or the optional HEPA.

After changing all the filters you can sprinkle some baking soda on the floor and vacuum it up - that usually helps with the pet smells.

heres a tip......Car Tree Fresheners......VanillaRoma scent, or any you prefer....I slide one along side the bag..good for about 2 months....keeps the vacuum fresh, and smells great when in use...

for me, seems to work the best......and I have used the beads, scent chips, scent tablets, RugFresh stuff....even the sprinkle on fresheners that you vacuum up don't last as long, or destroy all odors..

also just put some vanilla extract on cotton balls and place them in the bag chamber.
Pet smelling vacs need to be thoroughly disassembled and cleaned to exercise the dog smell if they really reek.

Let me share what I had to do with my Miele Ariel vac when I sucked up cat pee by accident...and let me tell you I was none too happy about and the aroma was unreal...lol...I took the hose and soaked it in the tub with borax and warm water. I also did the wand as well and the floor tool. I changed the bag and filters as well. Then I got some Arm and Hammer carpet deoderizer for pet smells...the one in the cardboard box with the flip top lid. I sprinkled that on the carpet and vacuumed it up. It took care of the aroma coming out of the vacuum.
I thought for sure that the vacuum was a goner when I was vacuuming the cat litter pad in front of the cat box, and to make matters worse, the pad is brown and has this raised pattern to catch the cat litter from the cats paws and not spread it all over the room the box is in. I have an elderly kitty that missed the box while she was in it...dont know how she did that, but she is talented! I was doing my usual daily vacuuming and as I was cleaning the pad, the pee , which was fresh, I might add, got right into the vac and was warmed up my the motor exhaust. When a gawd awful scent that is!So I can only imagine the stinkfest you have going on there....

Thanks for all the replys guys-i found new intake and exhaust filters in the new bag 4-pak,replaced dirty filters-but will have to try some of the ideas upthread to get rid of the odor...

If a HEPA filter with Charcoal is available for your model as an after filter, use that. It'll take all the stink out of the exhaust. We needed one on our Miele S314 because after 13 years of vacuuming up dog hair without the charcoal filter our machine has developed an odor too. We change all our filters every other bag, and the HEPA filter twice per year.

mostly good now...

I put the hose in the laundry sink and stuck filter flo drain hose in it and ran a couple detergent-overdosed hot water loads-that got the hose clean,the bag chamber of the Miele sprayed down and wiped with febreeze-getting rid of about 90 percent of the odor.With use and employing some of the methods mentioned upthread hopefully will clear the rest of the odor problem.
