I've just noticed on my 16 year old Maytag washer a few small rust spots developing on the bottom side of the outer wash basket. I'm just curious if this is something that should be taken care of now, or can go for awhile? I have no idea on how thick the steel is on the bottom of the tub. What's the best way to treat this? Sand it down and just repaint the affected areas? Thanks for any input....

Is there any way you can provide a photo of the affected area? Might just be surface rust. The best way to be sure is to examine the area from both inside and outside the tub. Depending on your level of expertise, this may or may not be a job you want to tackle on your own.

OUTER TUB RUST

The outer tub is never going to rust through from the outside. On all MTs there are a few small spots where the tub sat on its supports when it went through the firing process where there is no porcelain enamel and these are usually lightly rusted. If you want you can sand and protect these spots with paint suitable for this purpose, but is unlikely to make any difference in the life of the tub.
